Case of the Week #8
Surgery of the Week #8
Labia Reduction Surgery
This is a 21-year-old patient from San Francisco California, who came
to see San Diego Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr. Tom Pousti for a labia minora
(inner lips) reduction consultation. She had been interested in this
procedure for many years. During the consultation, Dr. Pousti examined
the patient finding excess tissue of the labia minora area. The patient
was happy to hear that she was a good candidate for this procedure and
that she would have a great result. She was very comfortable with Dr.
Pousti during the consultation. Knowing Dr. Pousti’s professional and
educational experience and background (double board certified in plastic
and reconstructive surgery) re-assured her that he was the Doctor to
perform her surgery.
She decided to proceed with labia minora reduction surgery. She was well
informed by Dr. Pousti and understood the risks and complication of this
procedure.

Dr. Pousti asks that patients who have labia reduction surgery
performed stay in bed for the first week with a pillow under the
buttocks to reduce swelling and to shuffle to and from the restroom when
needed. They also need to apply ice to the area on and off for 7 days
following the surgery -to help minimize swelling. The patient may begin
showering four days after surgery. The patient must keep the area clean
and dry at all times. For the first six weeks, a patient who has
undergone labia reduction surgery should avoid any strenuous activities
such as running, dancing, and swimming, not use tampons and most
importantly no sexual intercourse. The patient will be unable to drive
for approximately 1-2 weeks.
The surgery day: October 2006. Before entering the operating room,
the patient meets with Dr. Pousti as well as his wonderful staff (board
certified anesthesioligist and his registered nurses) to review the
procedure one more time. Also in the pre-operative area, Dr. Pousti will
perform the markings – this is when Dr. Pousti takes about 15 minutes to
draw on the patient and discuss the incisions. These markings are
essential for a smooth surgery. Here you can see the markings:

During the surgery, Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Tom Pousti works with his
highly trained team in the operating room to achieve the patient’s
goals.
Careful measurements were made with care taken to avoid- resection as
well as attaining symmetry.
The patient follows up in our office one week after surgery. Dr.
Pousti examines the patient to make sure that all incision lines are
healing and that there is no infection present.
During the recovery period, the patient must take care to protect her
incisions and not to overdo the activity. All the sutures are
dissolveable. It takes between 1-2 weeks for sutures to begin to
dissolve and therefore it is critical to limit the activity to prevent
wound healing problems.
Here she is only 1 week after her surgery:

During the first couple of months, there is a lot of healing that the
patient will undergo. The swelling will decrease with time and the
incision lines will be very hard to see. It takes approximately 6 weeks
to see the final result.
