Your Breast Augmentation Consultation
What to Look For

Before consulting with a surgeon, ask yourself why you would like to have breast augmentation.  Are you doing it to save a relationship?  Are you doing it because you've been depressed, and you think the surgery will bring you out of it?  Are you doing it because your significant other wants you to?  If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you are wanting the surgery for all the wrong reasons.  You should have this surgery ONLY if you want it for yourself.  Breast augmentation won't keep you and your partner together, nor will it bring you out of a depression.  Breast implants can make you feel better about your appearance, but they don't change what's on the inside.  It's also very important to have realistic expectations regarding your results.

Here are a few things to look for when you go for your consult(s):
 

• Is the office staff friendly and accommodating?
   

• Is the office clean?
   

• Does the plastic surgeon see you on time, or is he running late?
   

• Does the plastic surgeon give you his undivided attention?
   

• Does the plastic surgeon appreciate the fact that you've done your research?
   

• Does the surgeon go over all of the risks with you, as well as possible variations of the outcome?
   

• Does the surgeon welcome questions about his professional qualifications (which you should verify), experience, costs, and payment policies?
   

• Does the surgeon answer all of your questions in a satisfactory manner?  Are his/her answers thorough?
   

• Does the surgeon discuss your motivations and expectations with you?
   

• Does the surgeon solicit your reaction to his recommendations?  Does he ask you how you feel about them?
   

• Does the surgeon offer alternatives, where appropriate, without pressuring you to consider alternative procedures?
   

• Does the surgeon have plenty of before and after photos for you to look at?  Does he offer computer imaging?  If so, the surgeon should make clear that there are no guarantees that your results will look identical to the imaging results.
   

• Does the surgeon spend as much time with you as is necessary, or does he/she make you feel rushed?
   

• Do you feel comfortable with this surgeon?  Do you trust this surgeon to perform breast augmentation on you?  Are you confidant that you will get satisfactory results?

 

These are just a few things to look for at the consult.  Most women will instinctively know when they've found the right plastic surgeon.  But, pay close attention to everything.  Take notes during the consult.  Afterwards, as soon as you get an opportunity, write down what you liked about the surgeon, and what you didn't like, as well as his/her recommendations for you.  This is helpful, especially when you are going on several consults.  It's very easy to get mixed up and forget which surgeon said what.  taking notes is a must.
