Under vs over the muscle

Hello ladies. I'm still doing the research before I book my BA. I see most get under the muscle placement, but I'm curious as to what the benefit is as I feel the recovery would be worse. I understand the implant would be less visible, but are there any other benefits? Thanks for any advice!

My Plastic surgeon mainly does unders, but when he saw me he recommended that I would get better results if i went with overs, he said they would give a bit of a lift and thought i would get better results. Mine look very natural i get good cleavage, and have had no problems at all, because i had faith in the Dr that i chose, i went with his recommendation as i considered him to be the expert as he does this for a living.

I've had unders and overs. My revision ps had to give me overs for better cleavage, because my chest muscles are very far apart. And it's funny because my first ps asked me why I wanted unders so much cause I thought that's what everyone got, lol. After my first ba I had about 4-5 finger gap. Now I have about a finger and can get great cleavage

With unders, your breastbone dictates how close your cleavage will be, whereas with overs the pocket can be dissected closer in. Alternatively I could've just went up in cc's with unders so the implant diameter would match my BWD, but I would've had to get like 600-700cc's which was bigger than I wanted to go.

Just see what your ps recommends for you and your body type and trust him. If I hadn't just followed the crowd on unders, I probably would've just gotten overs the first time around and been quite happy. Good luck!

Thanks for the response. I've heard that women who have little breast tissue to start with (my case) can gain a better look from overs. However I'm concerned with seeing the implant. I have a slight concaved chest so I can't see the cleavage thing being an issue. Do you personally see your implants with your overs? Also, did your overs drop more than your unders, seeing as how they don't have the muscle for support?

Unders were recommended for me because I had very little breast tissue to actually work with. As it turns out my unders turned out wonderfully. There's around an inch between my two breasts. I don't think my BA could have turned out any more naturally than it has.

Benefits to unders is that the muscle creates another layer on top of the implant which may make it look more natural (depends on your anatomy). I had no breast tissue so I wanted that extra layer between the implant and my skin. But the biggest reason for me in choosing unders was mammograms and breast exams are easier to perform with unders b/c the implant is not blocking your ability to feel or see something on a scan. Not sure if that is a concern for you but breast cancer runs in my family and I need the peace of mind.

I consulted with 2 PS's that agreed the standard amount of breast tissue required for overs is about 2cm. This can be determined by your PS by doing a pinch test of the tissue. I was a half to one cm over the cutoff line. I was given the option. i chose overs because I like the look and heard they feel more natural as they move with your breast tissue. No flex distortion. Cutting my pecs seemed invasive. I went with subfascial placement which is over the muscle under the fascia. With only a slight amount over the cutoff for breast tissue, you cannot see my implants or feel them (unless you're really searching for them). Because I got silicone they feel completely lifelike. I have no rippling after 4 months post op. The recovery was a breeze. My only complaint is that with overs, your natural "gap" will usually get slightly smaller (or much smaller if you attempt to alter it). I started out with less than a finger width, now have next to none. this makes bra shopping and wearing a pain, as great as the cleavage is. If you're naturally very close set you many want to consider unders as you will have at least a one inch gap because of the seperation of the chest muscles.

Unders got popular with the removal of silicone in the market. With the new generation of silicone implants, the risks of CC and rippling are much much lower, even with overs.

I just wanted to add I noticed you posted this under the "anatomical & shaped implants" forum. I am not sure if you plan on getting anatomicals but my experience has been with round smooth implants. All anatomical are textured implants, and there is some research to suggest it may lessen the incidence of CC, however rippling is more common with textured. Another thing you may want to consider when deciding over vs. under.

Glad to help, from a fellow Canadian just a province away

I am not sure about anatomicals yet, just still trying to gain some insight. Probably leaning towards round smooths. I didn't even notice you are Canadian! Where did you have your surgery preformed?

They look totally natural, you can't see them at all & I started out with an A cup. They do look lower now but it's because I switched profiles from mod+ to mods, which have less projection.

Unders are better for mammogram readings.

That was a benefit for me when I chose to switch from overs to partials.

I had enough tissue to do overs and the benefits for me were because I work out a lot, my PS suggested it would be better. the recovery was super easy, and I wanted a more natural look. I cannot feel my implants at all, and I have no rippling at all, which are some of the issues with overs. I am very happy with my results and would do overs again in a heartbeat! GL!

I was curious how unders would affect my fitness lifestyle. Hopefully it's not a huge issue for me.

I am getting overs as I showed my PS for the look I wanted he suggested overs. I too have very little tissue, I was measured at 2.5 cm so I am just over the recommended 2 cm to go over the muscle. I want the round fake look Good luck with you information gathering, you will get a lot of great advice from this site!

I am not an expert on this but the way I understood it was it could lead to more muscle distortion, and also if you have big pecs it would be hard to get under and also a much longer recovery. I could be wrong, but that's how I understood. And since I do weight training as well, it was recommended that I go with overs, since I had enough tissue and I also wanted a more natural look but due to my bwd I had to go with UHP which has tons of projection! Lol. Hope this helps! I would just talk to your PS and tell him about your specific work out routine and he/she will tell you what they recommend for YOU. :-)

I have had both. My first was under. I bottomed out and my former PS decided to put them over. Surprised they didn't end up on my back!!! (Long story lol) I hate them. I have the worst rippling ever. I think because he changed them to textured. I have a fair amount of breast tissue. But didn't make a difference for me. I am now having them put back under - new PS (same as yours). I am hoping for success this time. Anyway...my vote is for under....and a good PS...which I think I found now.
