Birth Control

Hello,

Is it necessary to discontinue taking birth control pills prior to surgery?

Thanks,
KC

Birth control pills and surgery

Unless you are taking birth control pills for a medical reason other that simply birth control, it is good to stop taking them about 3wks before surgery. Being on birth control pills increases your chances of having blood clots or DVT which can be serious. This specially important if you are a smoker as the two combined can be dangerous. So, I advise all my patients to stop all their birth control pills for about 3wks before surgery and you can start taking them again about 2-3 wks after surgery. Just remember you have to be on them for two cycles for them to be effective for birth control. Always discuss your medications with your surgeon and ask their preferences. Safety always comes first.

Birth control pills and surgery

Of course every medication is different. The general rule is if you are on any hormones to stop them before surgery to decrease your chances of blood clots or DVT's.

Birth control pills and surgery

As each medication is different with the mix of estrogen and progesterone being different, I would recommend having your plastic surgeon and gynecologist discuss the specific hormone you are taking. The risk is still very low but the general guideline is to be off of these medications for about 3wks prior to your surgery to decrease your chance of having a DVT.
