![]() | Can I get a Breast augmentation even if i have ITP (Idiopathic thrombocytopenic)?
Okay so I am really worried that I wont be able to have a breast augmentation early next year. I'm 18 years old. soon to be 19, and I have a 1 year old daughter that I breast fed for 11 months. during the beginning of my pregnancy I was diagnosed with ITP, because I had a low platelet count of 80,000. The lowest it dropped during my pregnancy was 30,000. At the end of my pregnancy in order to deliver I had the choice of either doing a transfusion called IVIG (I think) or taking steroids called prednisone. I chose to take the steroid and I successfully was able to raise my platelet count and deliver vaginally, with no bleeding problems at all. After delivering I was told by my doctor's that my ITP should disappear right after giving birth. Well a year later I went to recheck my count and it came back 57,000 which is still very low. So now I have to go see a hematologist. Now my question is, do I have to get this issue resolved before my breast augmentation, or can I just go see my doctor and have her put my on prednisone again before the surgery? By the way the insurance I have is Tri-care Prime. ![]() |

I would not give up hope but you want to get healthy first before doing an elective surgery. ITP patients can have dramatic changes in their platelet counts from week to week. Obviously the platelets you do have are working so they are good qualitatively. In short the answer is you could probably have a breast augmentation while under the care of a hematologist. You want to make sure you are alive for your little angel. Good Luck, Dr. Kearney |
