Smile Tae Kwon Do and implants

Dr Kearney, I've seen differing opinions on this subject. I practice Tae Kwon Do which at times involves punching and kicking to the chest. We do wear chest protectors & gloves/footgear, with the emphasis being Light contact, however there is still contact to the chest. I'm considering breast implants as I've always wanted a 'normal' size chest (i am a 34A). Am I precluded from Tae Kwon Do with implants due to increased likelihood of rupture ? Would the type of implant i choose (saline or silicone) lessen the chance of rupture ?

I'll be watching this thread as well! I train in Tae Kwon Do and haven't had my breast augmentation as of yet. When I did go to my first onsult with the surgeon's assistant she felt that after the 6 weeks I should be fine to go back to classes.

The academy I train at does put an emphasis on sparring. I'm not keen on competitive sparring and choose to enter competitions for patterns only. But the possibility of a knock to the chest in class is there. It has happened before.

There are some serious chest guards out there!!

I'm watching too! My nurse also says around 6 weeks probably, depending on what PS says then.

I think the sparring should be fine with the chest protector- I'm more worried about push ups and hitting/punching (losing power).

Thanks for starting this thread!

If you get hit hard enough to break the implant you would probably be dead. I would go ahead and put implants in with out giving it a second thought. You can use silicone or saline, I typically use silicone in a woman with very little breast tissue to cover the implant.

Tae Kwon Do and implants

Thank you Dr. Kearney ! I so appreciate your response !
As a current 34A, 5'7" 150 lbs, Would saline be difficult for me to look good in ? I realize i haven't given you any other measurements
I'm concerned about the initial cost of silicone and the follow up cost for MRIs etc (typically $2000 or more i think)...not to mention the greater chance of capsular contracture w/silicone.
What are your thoughts ?
I'm going for my 1st consult this Thursday...will ask all these questions of course.
Appreciate your input.

.

Saline and silicone look exactly the same. Silicone will feel a little better along the bottom and side of your breasts but in most women the difference in feel is not that big a deal. You are correct about the risk of CC - the national study would suggest that the CC rate is 4 to 5 times higher with silicone. The failure rate of saline is 2.5% at ten years and that of silicone slightly higher. I advise patients about getting MRI scans but sometimes the MRI scan shows an intracapsular rupture which maybe a crease in the implant and not a rupture. Having said all of that I think either implant would be ok.

I would see if you can get your hands on both implants in the office, the silicone will feel better in your hand once under the muscle it is hard to tell the difference .except for the difference in feel laterally and below the breast.

sorry to hijack this thread but it is kind of a similar question so didn't want to make a new one....

Does any exercise affect implants such as lifting heavy weights or running fast?

Once the implants are in and settled into the packet exercise will temporarily deform the implants but will not affect the overall position or appearance when the muscles are relaxed.

Thanks BlackIrish for writing ! I've seen some serious chest protectors in TKD catalogs - to be worn inside a bra. Are you considering something like that or just the regular protector worn on top of the uniform ?

Thanks expat for responding ! I'm not keen on sparring either...have to go to the sparring classes though (required)...are you considering a separate chest guard (i've seen them in TKD gear catalogs) worn inside a sports bra ? or just the regular protector worn on top of the uniform ?
thanks for writing !

Dr. Kearney,
The bottom and sides of the breast issue that you mentioned - are you saying that w/saline I'd be pretty likely to have rippling there?

You can have rippling on the bottom and the sides with either implant but yes it is more likely with a saline implant. You will only see it when your breasts are unsupported. It is not typically visible in a bra or bathing suit. You typically will only see it on the sides but feel some on the bottom.

Thumbs up Thanks!

I am so glad I found this thread... I parctice boxing and am training for a 5k/half-marathon in Dec. so I was worried about how having breast augmentation would affect my training.... Thanks for the great information!
