Hair loss after BA

Hello Dr. Mele!

I heard hair loss is common after a breast augmentation and any other surgery. Is this true? I had my breast augmentation 8 weeks ago and my hair is falling out. How long after surgery does this stop? I'm concerned because I've never had so much hair fall out before.

Thank you for your time.

Hair loss after surgery

Any stress can cause hair loss, and surgery counts as a form of stress. The anticipation, the anesthesia and the recovery each have some stress associated with them.

Hair loss is not usually a major complaint with surgery, but it can occur. It is not unusual to have some increased hair loss in the few weeks after surgery, and it may take a few months for it to grow back. Hair tends to "sleep" for a month after after it falls out, and then begins to grow back.

I have heard some patient use topical Rogaine to try to decrease the hair loss and help kick-start regrowth. Since there is a wide variation in normal recovery I don't know it this helps, but it probably won't hurt. If you try it, let me know if it helps you.
