![]() | How serious is a Seroma??
Hello Dr. Mele, I had my surgery done abroad as I was in a hurry to get my implants in and I had just sent my surgeon some photos of my breasts and he has said I have a seroma in each breast. But he told me to wait 4 months to fly to see him and have my implants removed and replaced with smaller ones ( I think I went to big) and then place drains in. But is waiting 4 months going to hurt me in any way. I was thinking of going to a surgeon close to home but am worried they wont want to drain the fluids and I dont know the cost. Thanks so much for your time and greatly appreciate it. Ashley |

![]() | How do you know it's a seroma?
Dear jamsmak04: My advice to you is to see a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in your area now and not wait 4 months. Pictures only tell part of the story and they are your breasts, you want the best opinion you can get. A seroma is not usually serious; however, that is not a diagnosis that can be made from a photograph. It could be a hematoma which can lead to infection, capsular contracture and further problems. Unfortunately, this is the second time I have had to make this advice on the forum today. After getting the additional information from an informed second opinion, then you decide what is best for you. I recommend staying home and seeing a reputable plastic surgeon who you can communicate with, and who you can see for all routine follow-up appointments. I follow my patients for at least a year, no matter how perfect the result, to be certain it stays that way. The surgery is the most important determinant of a result; however, the follow-up is also very important. It should not be neglected.
