Allergic reaction to Mederma?

Hi Dr. Pelletiere

I started putting mederma on my breast augmentation/BL incisions at 2 weeks post op, per PS instructions. I am now a little over 3 weeks post op and the incisions seem more pink now than before. Actually, my incisions were healing quite nicely with nothing. I wash my hands thoroughly before applying the product and I have also noticed the skin on the index finger I use to apply it has been peeling quite a bit.

Could I be having a reaction to the mederma or is this color change normal at this stage? Should I switch to something like Bio Oil? Thank you Dr.

Dr. Pelletiere will become famous soon enough
There is a chance that you could be getting a reaction to the Mederma, especially if you are getting a reaction on your finger from applying it. It doesn't hurt to stop it and try something else - Vitamin E, Bio OIl, Aloe VEra, scarguard, etc. If you are sensitive to lotions, etc., then I usually suggest silicone sheeting for the scars (www.newmedical.com sells them).

Thanks Dr.

My PS did tell me to start using the silicone sheets along with the mederma at the same time (apply mederma then place silicone on top). I just purchased the oleeva ones and will try them. How long throughout the day do you suggest to wear them for the best results? They are expensive so I am hoping to make it last, as well.

Just use the silicone sheets without the mederma all day. Take them off at night, and then just reapply the next morning. The nice thing is that they are reusable - you can usually wash them and reapply. Even if the adhesive wears off, just use a piece of tape then.
