How to help numbness?

Hi Doctor -

I was wondering if I could get your opinion - or rather what you would tell a patient who is "suffering" from numbness a year out. The numbness is occuring basically in the area from the incision site to the nipple, spanning that lower bottom half. Is there anything that can be done? Would a revision release any tension and help? Any info would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Dr. Pelletiere will become famous soon enough
This is a little unusual since most patients do not have numbness a year out. It is not uncommon to have numbness from the nipple to the inframammary fold, but most women have return of sensation by about 6 months. However, nerves act differently than other tissues in our body and do not like to be stretched at all, hence the transient numbness. I usually tell patients it can take up to two years for any nerve changes to occur if they are going to. I doubt a revision of some sort would help the situation. Just be patient - it should come back to you. I have never encountered a patient who has permanent numbness, so take heart.
