![]() | Post Op Infection Question
Hello, I had a breast augmentation on 11/6 and was given IV antibiotics as well as 3 days of erythromycin post op. I must admit, 3 days didnt seem like much. Now, I've been diagnosed with an infection in my left breast, drainage, pain, fever, etc. Now, I'm on Levaquin while I await a culture. In your experience, have you successfully treated infection with antibiotics rather than additional surgery? Or have ever had to go directly back to the OR for drainage or removal? I really appreciate your time and any information you may be able to provide. Stephanie

Sometimes antibiotics alone will clear up the infection. You just never know until you get into the process. Sometimes, you have to remove the implant and irrigate the pocket with betadine/antibiotics. If it looks just like a mild infection, you can soak the implant in betadine and then place the implant back in. The more severe infections call for changing to a new implant, and sometimes you have to take it out, leave it out for 3-6 months, and then replace it when the infection has cleared. The first start is always antibiotics. If there is no improvement on them, or only mimimal improvement, then the next step is surgery. Sometimes the implant gets seeded with bacteria, and no matter what you do, it will not clear until you change the implant.
