Complications
Hello Dr. Pelletiere,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I am just over two weeks post op, so far everything is going well. Can you tell me is there a cut off date for hematoma, seroma, and other complications that typically happen early in recovery. I know CC can happen anytime. But for the others, when can I stop worrying about whether sex or lifting something heavy is going to cause me to pop open a few blood vessels and along comes a hematoma? I'm comparing it to looking forward to my "second trimester" for my boobs. Thanks |

Once you are out of the first week, the chances of complications are very low. I ask my patients to take it easy for the first week. After the first week, they can get back to doing all of their normal things except for vigorous exercise. Sexual activity is ok at that point as long as it is not uncomfortable and there is not excessive squeezing of the breasts. At the three week mark after surgery, the patients are given the green light to go back to any activity they were doing prior to surgery, including full exercise. CC can happen at any time, so you just have to watch the breasts, and if one of them starts to feel firmer, call your plastic surgeon so that he/she can examine you. If you are two weeks out, you should be pretty clear of a hematoma/seroma/infection.
