What kind of warranty to expect

What kinds of warranty's to plastic surgeons commonly provided. Is it normal to want your surgeon to offer a warranty stating that if there is anything wrong or any problems complication (I don't mean like if you don't like the size, i mean if they come out lopsided/ look like a less then great job or theirs a complication or bad rippling etc)the redo will be completely free ie: anesthesia, surgeons fee etc ? I would feel more comfortable in a plastic surgeon if they offered something like a complete warranty. Is that too much to expect... what is commonly offered?

Warranty

Honestly that is too much to expect.

This is not like buying a TV. The way you take care of them afterwards and the way your body responds to the surgery can make or break a great augmentation. Closet smoking, wearing the wrong bra too soon, capsular contracture, implant deflation, exercising too soon, falling down, ignoring the postop instructions, etc., are all things outside of the surgeon's control that I have seen ruin a good augmentation and create a situation where further surgery is necessary.

On the other hand, if there is a problem in the early postop period (let's say the first year) then most plastic surgeons, myself included, will perform a revision without charging a surgeon's fee. However, most PS do not control the anesthesiologist or the hospital and therefore cannot agree to waive their fees for them.

These policies are not stated in writing, but everyone should ask about these situations during their consultation.

Best Wishes,
Don Revis, MD

So then what exactly constitutes a surgeon typically offering a revision lets say within the first year... bottoming out, cc, excessive rippling etc?? Are there specifics on this?

Warranty

It really depends on the situation. If I were to see you at 3, 6, 9, 12 months and we decided something could be made better- better symmetry because one was too high or too low, capsular contracture, etc. then I would typically say let's fix it. I am a perfectionist and want my results to be the best I can possibly make them.

However, the timing, the things included in this offer, and what it exactly covers varies from surgeon to surgeon. I always try my best to find a way to make my patients happy. That's really what you should want- a PS who takes pride in the quality of his or her work, who is actually interested in his or her patients, sees them more than just another surgery to perform, tries to understand exactly what it is that they want before surgery, and then tries his or her best to deliver.

Sincerely,
Don Revis, MD
