Preexisting lupus

Dr. Revis:

I am scheduled for surgery 3/1. I have opted to go with a silicone implant (Mentor). I asked my PS this question but would also like to ask you if you would so kind to consider. If your wife had preexisting lupus and wanted silicone would you be comfortable with this?

I know silicone hasn't been ruled out for someone with my condition, I am still a candidate for silicone but also I just learned that there has been no testing whatsoever on women with my condition. Why would they not in the extensive testing that was performed not include any women with preexisting lupus or other autoimmune issues?

Preexisting Lupus

Good evevning,

I was part of the FDA silicone implant study, and they ruled out any patient with an autoimuune disease because the study was to determine if these implants caused the disease, which turned out there was no evidence to suggest they can cause an autoimmune disease. I have several patients in your situation without any problems.

Best Wishes,
Don Revis, MD
