Why do some PS say wire vs no wire bras post BA?

Dr. Walden,

Can you help me out? My PS recommends not wearing underwire bras for 3 months post breast augmentation, yet, when I read info on this forum, so many PS told other patients that underwire was okay?

Do you know what the benefits and risks would be to wearing underwire bras?

Underwire bras

I usually ask my patients not to wear an underwire bra after a typical breast augmentation for about 3-4 weeks. Every surgeon has his or her own regimen based upon what procedure they have performed, implant used, and patient anatomy so we should respect that. I like patients to not wear a bra during the time that the implants are settling in the pocket since I perform submuscular augmentation and they tend to ride a little high at first...tank tops and tankinis are good in this first few weeks. I just find that underwire bras tend to give support and push up implants more than a non-underwire or jog-bra. Also, if one has an inframammary crease incision, it affords it time to heal without the underwire rubbing on it and causing potential irritation.
