Reaction to Antibiotics???

Not sure if this is technically a "complication" as such, but was wondering if anyone else had this happen to them :

As far as I know, I've no allergies to any meds (I know both the mother and the sister do, but both dad and I tested negative), and I narrowed it down to the antibiotics by stopping taking the other meds...

Well - the short of it is - the antibiotics were putting me to sleep, and since I had to keep taking them 4 times a day, I was pretty much useless. I've got about 3 days to go on this stuff seeing as I've just read all the warning labels on the "replacement" meds (Cipro) they tried giving to me, and decided that it'd be better for me to just continue with this for 3 more days vice starting another 10 days of the other stuff which has the WARNING that it WILL make me sleepy, and I shouldn't operate a vehicle etc etc etc...

The only thing I could think of was because of my low blood platelet count - not low enough for me to be anemic, but still something I watch every once in a while (aka, before I end up doing massive surgery - lol).

I've only heard about this one - one of my co-workers said it hit him after his antibiotics got to him for his pneumonia...

Exposure to sunlight gave him headaches... and while I can't say I've had "headaches", I can certainly say that trying to go shopping down the refridgerated juice/milk aisle at the grocery store was starting to make my vision go weird... waaaaay too bright. The rest of the store seemed fine, but it wasn't "bright" as such.

When I mentioned it to the nurses at the clinic to see if they could give me something else - they were pretty nonplussed, and asked if I was sure that's what was doing it, and when I told them that I wasn't taking the pain meds, the valium or the nausea meds, and only the antibiotics, it sorta narrowed it down to that! Oh well!

Anyone else have a "fun" reaction like that?

That is odd. I haven't ever heard of anyone having a reaction like that to an antibiotic. I'm not saying it can't happen, I've just never heard of it. Are you eating any greens or red meat? If you aren't you should. It could be your iron is low. I wouldn't suggest any iron supplements until you can ask your PS if they are ok to take so soon post-op.

I'm not sure you should change to Cipro just yet, not unless you think you have an infection. Cipro is a very strong wide spectrum antibiotic. What antibiotic are you on now, Keflex?

I was given Cipro for my UTI, and only 4 days into it I got a yeast infection! And I was only given that b/c the UTI was pretty skanky already.

Yup, I'm on the Keflix/Cephalexin (generic)- 500mg ea - 4 times a day. I just know that the Cipro is overkill, so was thinking whoaaaaaaaaa, if this stuff is doing this to me, why on earth would I willingingly go "yeah - gimme stuff that will definitely throw me for a loop"??

Eating a mix of everything, really liking fruit, but staying away from the grapefruit per one med that I'm not even taking - tho I've had a craving for pickles recently - and no, I'm not pregnant!!! ;P

Think it could be the "quantity" of mg I'm supposed to take - not that it really bothers me that I tend to crash on the couch a lot *lol* Maybe I'm just weird like that *silly grin*

I'm still taking it easy - no massive hikes for me or anything like that yet, so I know I'm not trying to pretend "nothing happened" and get back to "real life" like that, but my head still feels "fuzzy" after I take the antibiotic - typical medicine head, I guess. Almost like a sinus cold, but without the pressure behind the eyeballs/nose.

Yeah, isn't that kinda weird tho? One of the nurses said "yeah, we get the side effect of yeast infections, but never heard of it making people snoozy"...

Definitely staying away from all that Cipro..... *bleaaaaaaaaa*

I took Cipro instead of Keflex bcs I once had a slight allergic reaction to Keflex. I had no problem with Cipro.

All antibiotics can give you a yeast infection, because they suppress the good bacteria in your intestines that usually keep the bad yeastie beasts at bay.

THe doctor will know what to do.

*Grins* Well, his assistants all kinda looked at each other with a "that's odd" look when I mentioned it again yesterday at my 1 week post op...

Yay! I get to be the weird one again! *grins ruefully* A right medical marvel I am! *winks*

My reaction wasnt like that...but they gave me the most painful indigestion ever....I was crying with the pain in my tummy, and couldnt eat for days, cos it aggravated it, that was why my first week was so shitty... I tried the special yogurts, the antacid pills the lot, so strange how they affect us

I took CIpro after my redo, and I didn't have any reaction to it at all. My mother is allergic to a ton of antibiotics (as well as a ton of other meds), and her reactions are normally rashes, etc. To me (in my non-professional/non-medical doctor opinion), it sounds more like a possible side effect. If you were allergic, I think you would have some type of reaction like a rash, throat closing up, hives, etc.

isn't it tho? Sorry to hear yours was bad! Thankfully mine isn't painful, it's just really annoying to just be "dropping" off for a while... at least I can sorta "plan" around mine.

That's why I was just weirded out by my reaction - if I'm having any reactions, I haven't seen any phyiscal evidence of it - no major hair loss (aside from the massive damage I tend to do to my hair on a routine basis - yeah, I like using that peroxide to strip my hair), no hives, no itching, scratching, major mental differences aside from general loopiness associated with me being me with bigger boobs *winks*
The only "noticeable" side affect was that really bright colors bothered me - like the refridgerated juice aisle in the supermarket - which I thought was weird - I didn't try walking around the nappy/daiper aisle - the thought of the pampers pink n' reds was too much - kinda made my head spin, but not really nausea. I don't know... kinda weird.
Well, there's only a couple more days of the weirdness (hopefully).

jodyt will become famous soon enoughjodyt will become famous soon enough
chances are the reactions you are haveing could quite possibly be to do with being run down as a reaction to the opp rather than the antibiotics,
but it is possible that you just have a increased amount of candida, thrush this can actually be presant in your stomach but not down below and antibiotics can do this.as you will know if you have ever had thrush it can makew you feel groggy and run down this in turn makes you a bit sleepy

I don't really feel tired tho.. it just kinda knocks me out.... I can be having a conversation and the next thing I know I'm "outta there"... Not to mention the short term memory's feels fuzzy. I haven't forgotten stuff yet (at least if I have I've already forgotten but beyond that - I still have that typical medicine head. I just want it "gone"!
