Unhappy Fees for Complications

Hi Everyone,

I need some feedback. Four weeks ago I found out I had CC. PS said to try agressive massage and if it was not better by Feb he would have to do surgery. I did just what he said and today went in for a follow up. He said the CC was much better but would need to lower the pocket on my left side and on his way out the door he told me he would not charge me surgon fees but I would have to pay for anesthesia which would be $1200. There are no OR fees because he has a surgical suite in his office. I have had problems with the left side from the day after surgery. It was severly bruised and much more pain than the right. I am really upset that I am going to have to pay all of that money again. I thought a pocket revision was from the pocket not being low enough or wide enough to begin with. $1200 might not be a big deal to my PS but it is a ton of money to me. Anyone else had to pay for things like this? Is this normal? TIA

From what I have heard on here its totally normal. I know health care here in alberta covers stuff like that. I think thats how most surgeons do things.

I am so very sorry to hear this!

I have heard about this from several women on this board, that at the least they had to pay for anesthesiologist. Did you voice your concerns with your PS regarding the funds?

Good luck! I hope it works out.

Well unfortunately, it IS pretty much the norm for things like this. Some PS will do a revision (due to complications) for no cost, but most charge for anesthesia and/or facility fees or even full-price.

Maybe you can discuss this with him and see if he will come down on the price or work some type of arrangement out. Sorry you're dealing with this, complicationis suck!

yes I agree my ps did my bottoming out revision for the OR fee and not his fee... But it did not hold I don't know what I will be charges this time around but the additional expense is quite the bummer as I am finding out the hard way..

I also need a revision. I bottomed out at 3 1/2 months although my surgeon would not confirm it until 5 months. At 3 1/2 months he told me I had "mirror confusion" Mirror confusion is you sitting topless on an examining table looking down at your breasts trying to explian what is wrong with them when you really cannot see them....and since the problem is new you end up pointing to the wrong one because when you look at them in the mirror they are opposite. Anyway he said if anything the other one is off and left the room.
At five months I brought pictures and a mirror so I had no confusion! And he admitted the problem. My contract said if he deterimined a revision was needed I had to pay for hospital and annesthesia but when I got his price it included $750 for "booking and scheduling" so my total cost was about $1850 and since I did not want to reuse my implant (for risk of infection and it voids the warrenty) I had to add another $500/...so the total was $2450.
Not much I can do, I signed the papers. But it really sucks!

Can you tell me where I can find out exactly what alberta health care covers as far as complications?

My fee

I have to go in for a pocket revision and have to pay for the anesthesia. The DR is waiving his fee and a surgical centre fee. So the fee comes to something like $700 for me. If I want to trade out my implants at that time I pay for new implants at an additional cost of $1200. HTH

The price for anesthesia seems a little high to me! But it is pretty standard procedure to charge for that on revisions.

Where do you live? I think that is WAY high for anesthesia. What amount of time are we talking about? That is more than I paid for anes. for my whole surgery. If you live anywhere near FLA or have good cheap flights you should check out Aspen after Surgery dot com. They do a specialize ultrasound treatment for CC that is non surgical! I bet it would be cheaper even if you have to travel there and NO more surgery. It worked for me. go to their website and see what you think. Good luck!!

One of the questions I asked at my consult was what is covered in the event of a complication.

My surgeon said everything.. Very nonchalant.. We will take care of you ..is what he said.
I learned later that MSP ( medical services plan) covers the cost of complications.
I went back in the day of my surgery for the hematoma- Got put out again etc etc.. And I paid not one cent.

When i booked my surgery, one of the papers i signed was a "contract" for what the fee would be if additional surgery is needed within the first year after my original surgery. It is a $1200. fee for anest. only

Yes I think this is normal. I'm having a re-do in Jan & it's gonna cost $2500. Dr doesn't charge a fee is another surgery is done within a year but he does charge for anesthesia, surgical supplies, and the implants. Anesthesia is an expensive thing. Would you ever consider having twilight anesthesia instead of general? I think it's a good bit cheaper.

Based on everyone's reply I guess it is normal to pay for the surgery center fees but that doesn't mean you can't approach him and ask if you could work out a deal. The older I get the more I realize it doesn't hurt to ask. All he can say is sorry, no. Think through what you want to say beforehand. Don't get his defenses up but ask him why the pocket revision is needed. Tell him you're concerned about the $1200 fee and wanted to know if he can help you out in any way. I need to talk to my surgeon about something I'm not happy about and am bringing my husband for next week's follow up. He's a business man and I know it will help to have him there. Is there anyone you could bring with you?

I know it sounds like a lot to you, and it is a lot for me also, but I think it's considered decent and fair practice by a PS to waive their fees only for a redo. Technically, they don't have to unless it's their error and even then they can try to get away with saying it's not. Based on my experience, this is a good case scenario (sounds ridiculous I know).

I agree with the part about asking for a reduction. You could also ask him to finance it no/low interest while you pay it back. It's been done. Unfortunately, I couldn't even get my complications diagnosed and ended up going with a second PS to get them diagnosed and fixed. Now, that was more money!!

I paid 1300 for my revision (anest . & for the OR) the only time I didn't pay was for my emergency hematoma, so it's normal that you have to pay for revisions unfortenatly. But you should def ask if there is any way that he could reduce the price.
