A most excellent adventure!!

Hi everyone – here’s my looong story! I have to say up front that it was an excellent experience. Everyone at the surgery center was incredibly professional and personable…I felt so at ease. I went through all of the pre-op activities with a grin on my face – I was really ready!!

Yesterday morning dh and I arrived at the surgery center right on time. I paid, got a nice little paper bracelet, and signed a few forms. We then sat in the waiting area and watched HGTV for about 15 minutes before I was called back. I went back alone, went potty, got undressed and changed into a gown, and crawled into bed under a nice warm blanket. My nurse, Melanie, was super nice! She gave me a little shot of lidocaine (only stung a bit) before she inserted the IV needle. She nailed it on the first try and I really didn’t feel it going in at all. I could tell she taped it down to my wrist, but that was it. She went over my history again and I signed another form. She wrapped my calves in some massaging wraps that would be inflated during the surgery to prevent any potential blood clot issues.

She then went and got dh so he could sit with me while I waited to go in. After a short while my anesthesiologist came in to tell me a little bit about what he was going to do. He was of Asian descent and spoke with an accent and I had to listen pretty hard to what he was telling me at times, but there was something very cute and calming about him. He went over my history, too, and told me he’d give me something in the IV to counter any nausea, just in case. He explained that I’d be wheeled into the OR and they’d “put me to sleep” in there (glad I’m not canine).

I was scheduled for a 9:10 procedure, but my ps’s first surgery went a bit longer than expected so I had to wait about an extra half hour. Surprisingly, I was not really all that nervous. Just very excited!!! OK, maybe a little nervous because during the wait I had to potty two more times!

Next up, my ps came in to draw on me with a very fat, very black Sharpie marker. I have (oops…HAD) some slight asymmetry that he felt he could correct during surgery so he marked that up a lot. He went over a couple of things with us but not much since we’d covered things quite extensively at my pre-op appointment.

After another short wait, the nurse anesthetist (Jeff) and the OR nurse (Judy) came in to get me ready to go. I went potty (again – who knew I could hold so much after not drinking anything for so long), put on a fancy little hat, and hopped back into bed with another warm blanket. Jeff explained that he was going to put a small amount of calming meds into my IV, and that they’d roll me into OR right up to the table in the OR so I could scoot over. Then they’d put me under.

As we were heading toward the OR, Judy explained that it would be pretty cold in there and that they’d have a nice heavy warm blanket for my body (which sounded quite inviting…I love heat). We started through the first set of double doors and into a hallway. There was another set of double doors prior to entering the OR area. Honestly – I do not even remember going through the second set of doors. I have no recollection of the operating room, or of seeing my ps again. I had been all prepared to start counting down from 100 or finding a happy place. Nope – nothing. I was out much earlier than that!!!

When I opened my eyes I was a big clock out in the hallway that read quarter til noon, and I knew I was done! My mouth was SUPER dry, my throat only a little sore from the tube. I had some water and Sprite which helped a little, but not all that much really. I didn’t feel sick at all, but I was in a lot of pain, even though my post-op nurse (Judy) had just put some Demerol into my IV. So....I got an Oxy pill, and a bit later I was still hurting pretty badly so then I got a Vicoden. I was prepared for pressure and some pain, but initially I will admit that it was more than I bargained for. I've survived a few massive migraines, and this hurt a lot...but it was a different pain. Anyway, the IV came out, she went over post-op directions, and then it was time to go (after going potty...yet again, ugh!). Once in the car, I reclined the seat back and my chest felt much better. I think maybe I was sitting upright a little too much in recovery.

I slept most of the ride home, and then again for about an hour and a half when we got home. My dd got me a CD called “Lifescapes: Music for Healing” for my birthday last week. It’s kind of mellow and new-agey, so I played that and drifted off to lala land….very nice.

I am wrapped and I have a pain pump. I am actually not in any significant pain, but I am keeping up with some pain meds as well as an antibiotic. Right now, I just feel a lot of pressure on my chest mostly, and tightness. I can take a deep breath slowly. Just moving around in general is a little challenging. Sitting up on my own is pretty tough and I usually have some help with that though. I noticed a different type of pulling pain on my right side, but I think it may be due to the way the pain pump catheter is taped to my skin. I can’t see it real well from the wrap, but dh peeked down there and didn’t see anything that looked weird.

Since I am wrapped I can’t see a lot, but I have peeked here and there and so far I am super happy. I did not go really big. I have a few more cc’s in one side to help correct a small amount of asymmetry, and afterwards the ps told dd that I now have nice symmetry and that everything went very well.

So….today I am just resting, and hanging around…watching some movies with the kids, surfing this site (as always). I can’t wait until Sunday when I can remove the wraps, take out the pain pump catheters (we’ll see how that goes), and see just what I’ve got here (oh, I can shower then too…it’ll be time!).

I also have to say that I am positive I would not be where I am right now without this site and all of you wonderful ladies. The information I learned and the support I received made it the great experience that it was.

Thank you!!!

Great story, Blueayes! I love reading a nice, detailed BA story! I'm so glad everything went smoothly and that you're happy with your results! Also, I have to say that I'm very glad your anesthetist didn't "put you to sleep." LOL. I had a good chuckle over that one. Welcome to Boobieville!

Hi everyone! I forgot to add that the day I was at the surgery center was also "kid dental day." So....there a number of little ones there that needed some type of general anesthesia for various procedures....some kids were just uncooperative in the regular dental office and had to be put under just for routine x-rays and cleanings while others needed extractions or other more complicated procedures. There were some real cuties and a couple of little shysters, too! They made for an interesting distraction, for sure!

I am doing my best to get lots of rest, yet I find it helpful to get up and just walk around a little, too because I feel kind of "stiff" if I don't....if that makes sense. With the pain pump my actual boobs do not hurt at all...the muscles to the sides and underneath them definitely are sore!
