I had been thinking seriously about getting breast implants for a couple of years – ever since my best friend got her's. When my boobs started developing at about age 10, that's about all the further they went! I got teased at school, was a member of the “itty bitty titty committee” in high school (not by choice). So yeah, I always wanted boobs. Everyone else in my family had them. I have lived in the midwest my whole life, and grew up in a family where nobody even considered plastic surgery. However, my husband had always been supportive of the idea as long as we had the money and time. I actually saved money for a business venture that ended up not working out, so this summer is when I decided that breast augmentation would be a great way to spend some of it! I made three appointments for consults. One of them was free, one cost $35 and another $65. I ended up only going to two of the consults. The first one ($35) offered exactly what I wanted, crease incision, silicone, iv sedation. The second (free) was everything I DIDN'T want, he only did saline, only armpit, and only under general anesthesia. The decision was easy, unless I decided I wanted to look in larger cities, but I was referred to the first surgeon by my own doctor who had a friend get her's done there and was very happy with the results. So, I went with that.
I had wanted to get them done by the beginning of August, as I am a teacher and that would allow me a whole month to recover before returning to work. Unfortunately, my surgeon was taking most of August off and there were no times left in July. But, I was able to get in for August 22, which I figured would give me enough time. The weeks leading up to the surgery went by quickly at times, and slowly at times. I was trying to enjoy the summer but I just could not WAIT to have boobs! My family went to three waterparks this year and it would have been so cool to have them for that, but oh well. I hardly told anyone about my plans for surgery – one coworker, two friends, and my husband! It was really hard for the first week after I had made the surgery appointment to not talk about it with everyone!! I was having the hardest time deciding whether to tell my mom or not. I knew she would try to talk me out of it. The night before the surgery I decided I would tell her. I kept calling and she wasn't answering, which was making me more nervous – I just wanted to get it over with! Finally she answered, and when I told her, her reaction wasn't that bad. I think she was shocked and just went into auto-response mode, but she also understood that I have wanted boobs since I was 12, it just never happened naturally for me! With that out of the way, I decided to try and get some sleep as we had to leave at 5:45 the next morning for the surgery. I woke up early (HA!), showered, got dressed, took out all my earrings, took off my rings, kissed my sleeping kids, and we left. We had a teenage babysitter spend the night so she would take care of the kids until we returned. In the car is when it really hit me. Actually, my husband first. He started crying, and then so did I. He thought I might die, or be completely changed by having boobs. I was only nervous about recovering from the iv sedation, as I am sensitive to medications, one in particular called Versed, which I hoped they would agree not to use. I got myself together by the time we arrived and we were met in the parking lot by a girlfriend of mine who would stay for the surgery along with my husband. We got to the waiting room and it was only a couple minutes before they came to get me. My husband and friend would not be allowed to go any further than the waiting room, even when I woke up, until they brought me out which was supposed to be about 3 hours later. This was a surprise to me, and made me more nervous because of how I deal with coming out of sedation. But, my boobs were waiting, so off I went! I got into a gown, peed in a cup, and went in a room with recliners and medical equipment in it. The nurse came in and asked a lot of questions, had me sign forms, and gave me tagamet and reglan and some water to take them. I'm paranoid about drugs, so I don't know if that's really what they were. She put in my iv and started saline. Then she put a half-dose of an anti-biotic in the iv (not the full yet to be sure I didn't have a reaction). The anesthesiologist came in to talk about that, and I told him I did not want Versed. He was hesitant at first, but then asked if I could take Valium instead. I said yes, so he had the nurse give me one of those to swallow too. Valium works rather quickly on an empty stomach I discovered! 10 min later the surgeon had me come into his office to mark me and decide on size. I gave him the printouts I had of before & afters that I wanted. I was a small 32A pre-op, and wanted to be a full C. After he suggested 350cc's, I don't remember anything. Not sure if I fell over right in the room or if I just don't remember! Then I have a very brief memory of walking into the operating room and climbing on the table, noticing it was really cold, and them asking me to scoot up and put my head on this soft, head-shaped pillow. I know they used fentanyl and propofol for sedation during the surgery. So I guess that did the trick because.... The next thing I am sitting in that same recliner in the first room again, the lights are off and nobody's around. I tried to lean forward and think I said “Hello?” (not sure if I actually said it, but thought I did). Then I know someone asked me how I was feeling. My chest hurt like crazy, and I heard someone say “Give her a shot of demerol.” Then I must've gone to sleep again. A while later, I know I had to use the bathroom and I think they had me walk there, the nurse kept saying “Keep your eyes open, come on, keep them open.” Though this might have happened before the surgery, like when I was going to the operating room, I really don't know! I was told they gave me Zofran in my IV after the surgery to ward off any nausea too. That worked for a while. Anyway, I didn't wake up agitated, crying uncontrollably or shaking or any of the bad stuff that happens when I get Versed, so I guess they must have listened and not given that to me. Thank God! And did I mention how nice everyone was?! They all answered my questions (I had lot of them!), were patient with me, were respectful and understanding, I think both the nurses had BA's so that was great, one just had her's 3 months prior, so that helped put me at ease for sure. Eventually they wheeled me out in a wheelchair to the waiting room where my husband and friend were waiting. I was in and out of it while the nurse explained all the post-op instructions to my husband. They gave me prescriptions for cephalexin and percocet (oxycodone), and sent me home with a couple of phenergen suppositories. When I got home, the pain medications had definitely worn off and I was in bad shape. I had shooting pain in my left breast going to my nipple. The poor babysitter had to see me like that, I think it scared the heck out of her! My oldest daughter took care of me while my husband took the babysitter home. I had to use a phenergen suppository before I could eat anything as I was nauseated. My husband had to put it in for me (I could hardly move my arms), he's such a good sport! A while later I ate some toast and took an oxycodone, which eventually helped take the edge off the pain. I slept off and on the rest of the day between the recliner and couch. I watched a lot of tv, and kept it on all night because I couldn't sleep well anyway. Day 2 we got up and went to see my surgeon. It was great to get those ace bandages off. They were the cause of most of my pain! My breasts didn't look very big and I felt a little disappointed, but he said they would get larger and more shapely and time passes. He was right. Within a few hours they were larger. Oh, and he gave me a couple of medical bras, which I was to wear 24/7. After the appointment, we actually spent most of the day at my parents' house because our cleaning lady was coming to our house and I didn't want to deal with that or be in the way. Day 3 my pain was getting significantly better. I had been using the oxycodone every 4-5 hours since surgery, but by the evening of day 3 I actually quit taking it and haven't had any since. Took a shower and it felt good. My husband washed my hair for me. And I was now able to go to the bathroom on my own, and was eating pretty well. Haven't pooped though. I took 4 senocot over the last 2 days and so far nothing. My stomach is a little bloated, and that's probably why. Day 4 it was back to the surgeon to learn how to push my implant around. I thought it was going to be terrible, but it really wasn't bad. It was quick and not that hard to do. I was surprised at how far you can move it though, and that it's not bad for it! So I am supposed to do this twice a day for I don't know how long. This is supposed to help prevent capsular contracture. I have some bruising on my sternum and swelling. My chest feels tight, it's like when you have a baby and your milk comes in, only there's more milk!!! Oh, and I finally pooped. YAY ![]() And that's as far as I am. My boobs look better and better every day! My next appointment is in 4 days to get my stitches out. So far this has been a great experience. I couldn't have imagined it going any better. To anyone who is thinking about having a BA, I would highly recommend it. Money can't buy happiness, but it sure can help! |

I love the long stories! Thanks for sharing. It sounds like your recovery is going great, I can't wait to see some picutures. I like that you had the cleaning lady working, I know that would help my recovery a lot. Take care.

Boy your story really helped me. I have been getting really concerned with the idea of all the potential problems and you just put my mind at ease.

Thank you everyone for your kind words!
I'm 10 days post-BA now, and I am finally feeling back to myself. Still a little tired, but I think it's because I got used to napping every day! I go back to work Wednesday, but just a half-day. I think I'll be ready.... Now, I just can't wait for my new boobs to "drop" and "fluff" as I've been reading about on here! |
