What I did tuesday

The story of my BA.
My date was set for August 26th, a time when autumn starts nibbling at the heels of summer in this part of the world. I had decided to flee some of the nervousness by going back to my hometown to visit the days before. Stayed with my mother and met with my daughter at University. Always feels good to sit there with two women I am so proud of. I pampered myself all Monday, met with my daughter´s hairdresser and changed from light brown to dark blonde. Got a facial at the nextdoor salon and started to worry in earnest when waxing my lip hurt soo bad, if I chickened out at that pain, how would I do tomorrow after surgery ?
Took the train back home late that evening, met with DH and the boys and started thinking about packing. I am not a fan of blouses apparently, couldn’t find anything in my closet that buttoned up so I settled for an old fleece jacket with a zipper, some comfy pants, two books, cell-phone and toiletries. I also got out the antibiotics my PS had prescribed to start the evening before surgery.
Both DH and I got an early start, the batteries for the smoke detectors decided that they needed changing at 5 am. Couldn’t go back to sleep after that but as there were no fresh coffee or breakfast to look forward to I just lied there, trying to relax. Quick shower, said goodbye to oldest son ( left the younger one sleeping ) and off we went in the car. Grey, rainy, no caffeine. I kept hoping I would be one of the first ones, didn´t want to wait. The drive is about half an hour, we got there at 7am ,DH dropped me off and left for work. Took my bags and marched inside. It is a beautiful place, right by the ocean with a stunning view. They checked my health history papers I had filled in, I paid by credit card and then up to my room, it was a small room with a bed and a TV, small bathroom all in grey and white tile, nice view out of the window. The nurse came with three different kinds of painkillers and some sedative in liquid form. As I was first on the OR schedule they told me to get a quick shower with antibacterial solution and then go down to meet my PS in his office. He seemed a bit hurried, took pictures and then started drawing on me. He drew cirles where he would put my nipples after the lift and took measurements here and there. I wanted to ask if he had some 350cc´s in store instead of the 325´s I had ordered but decided it was too late to bring that discussion up. Better just go with it I thought. Then up to the OR rooms. I have worked a lot in OR myself so I feel at home in the environment, I know every step they will take so I just relaxed. Got the needle in my arm, the drip going, some drugs that are part of the introduction and then lights out shortly before 8am. According to the records they wheeled me out at 9.40 but I have no memory of that. When I started waking up in earnest I felt calm. No real pain, just a heavy, heavy pressure on my chest and the liberating feeling of knowing that is was over and done, I could leave all the uncertainty behind. The deed was done. I also felt this ( bear with me here ) bonding with my new boobs, I had not even peeked below the covers but still felt that they were just as they were supposed to and that they were “me”, not something stuck on. When I finally did peek a bit they looked somewhat smaller than I had hoped but what can you expect of the poor darlings two hours out from surgery and all wrapped up in an underwire bra with gauze and tape. They certainly were high though, I kept running my finger between my collarbone and the top of my boob, not much space there.
Then I called the nurse, got an iv drip with painkiller, coffee and a sandwich. With a caffeine addiction as serious as mine I didn’t dare go without too long. Then I got the cellphone going, called my DH and my daughter. Had fun trying to take pics of the boobs with the phone and send to both DH and daughter. I didn’t feel like moving much but eventually had to go to the bathroom, the nurse helped me, I felt a bit too dizzy to try on my own. I walked out of the room just to move my legs a bit, gingerly holding on to my boobs and then back in bed. Watched TV, dozed off and on, had much trouble with my back, it was impossible to find a decent way to lie without my back aching. Late in the evening I felt some light nausea and got something for that which made me doze off some more. I used my phone a lot, talked to DH again and we decided that he would stay home with the boys instead of coming to see me. I felt more secure knowing he took care of them even though I also felt a bit lonely staying there alone.
I finally dozed off for the night but kept waking off and on and didn’t sleep at all after 3.30 am. My boobs were very uncomfortable but not painful really but I just couldn’t make myself comfortable. I was relieved when the morning shift came in, more painkillers and breakfast. PS came by, took my bra off in front of a mirror so I could see them for the first time. Since I have gotten both a full lift and a BA they do not resemble the old version one bit, for some reason I had the same reaction as the day before, these were mine and I felt happy seeing them. They have a long way to go but I already liked them. He drew a new line under them and told me to keep the underwire right on that line. I got an appointment to check them again next week and until then he wanted me to lift nothing. I then got my implant card ( silicone 325 cc ) , painkillers to take home and tape for the scars.
DH picked me up, he has taken three days off from work and I honestly do not think I could have managed otherwise. I am in very little pain as long as I stay propped up with pillows on the couch but I have trouble moving. The painkillers are making me a bit dizzy so today I have pretty much just stayed right on the couch, the dogs keep me company.
I am a bit amazed at myself for having gone through with the whole thing, curious to see how they will turn out when they have softened and dropped, and I am glad to have you guys to share this with. Rosie
