Drinking Alcohol After Surgery?

I was curious to know when you were allowed to drink alcohol after your surgery. Initially, I was given a sheet for post-op instructions and it said no alcohol for 4 weeks. However, I saw my PS yesterday for a follow up appointment and he said I can drink a little now. I am about 2 weeks post-op.

Also, does anyone know how drinking alcohol affects your recovery? I usually don't have any throbbing pain but last night after I had 3 glasses of wine, I felt a little throbbing and woke up a few times in the middle of the night to massage my breast.

My PS instructions were no alcohol 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after. I think for the bleeding risk as well as it affecting any medications you are on.

It takes regular use of alcohol to have any real blood thinning effects. Post op, my PS said that alcohol was fine, as long as I wasn't on prescription meds (as they can interact). I think I had a glass or two of wine at about 2 weeks post-op...and I had no problems from it.

MY PS said no alcohol while taking meds. I had a glass of wine last night, I think it helped me to sleep a little better last night. I did not wake up with morning boob... lol... But my only pre op instructions where no alcohol 24 hours prior to surgery. I think every PS is different and every patient maybe different.. Who knows...

My PS said no alcohol for 2 weeks, so that's how long I waited before having wine again. Wasn't on meds at that point, had no problems with it.

Mine said none 3 days prior to surgery and none as long as I was on the meds. He said he would prefer I wait 2 weeks after but because I'm not a regular drinker that 1 glass of wine after i was off my meds wasn't going to hurt anything just don't do it every night.

I was on vacation after my surgery, so at around 2-3 week mark I was drinking fairly often. Everything is okay so far.

I was told 5 days after so long as I wasn't taking any narcotics anymore. I doubt anyone will feel like going out for a crazy night on the town but a glass or two of wine or a couple of beers is probably fine.

This is a tough one. For one, you cannot drink (or it is not advised) when on antibiotics, if you PS put you on them. You are also not supposed to drink with pain meds. And alcohol thins your blood so you have to be careful. Tho today I had my surgery and I was told if I wanted to skip one of my pain meds and drink a glass of wine tomorrow, I could. Just one glass tho. So it is a personal choice, just make sure you know all the facts and then you can decide. But you will probably be advised against it if you ask anyone.

This is so funny... My PS said that I was fine to drink anytime up to my surgery except the night before... and that as soon as I felt good enough to after my surgery I could drink again - I just needed to watch my pain meds and how they interact.

I got EXTREMELY drunk 2 days before my surgery... and then had 2 glasses of wine 6 days post op with no issue.

Same here! My pre op instructions were to not drink 24 hours before surgery. Nothing post op has stated no alcohol. Even on my antibiotics (Keflex). I obviously know that alcohol and pain meds are a bad combo but moderation is key. I love my wine with dinner, just a little less on the Percocets.
And, I did go an entire day without the narcs just so I could drive to Walgreens. As stated on a previous post, "The Chardonnay can't deliver itself."

You know what, Im kinda the type that doesn't follow the rules. I started drinking 4 days after surgery and I was completely fine. I guess it all depends on how are body reacts to things. When I drank, I just got a little swollen, that's it. Other than that...all gravy!!!..Good Luck with your recovery, and the next time you have a drink, have one for me too!!!!hee hee.. xoxoxo
