silicon implants and dropping insurance coverage?!

Hi ladies! I'm scheduled to have a re-do Nov 17th with Dr. Dewire. I have been pulling together all the paperwork and saw that some insurance companies will drop you or won't cover any complications with silicon implant surgery! Has anyone else experienced this? I'm almost afraid to even tell my insurance company that I'm having the surgery. Do they really have to know (unless, god forbid, I have trouble)!

If you have your insurance through your work (or your husbands work) they can't drop you for getting implants. If you have independent insurance, they can drop you for any reason they feel necessary.

I did tell my insurance company. I had to, I wanted a mammogram pre-breast augmentation and I had to get a referral from them to get it done. This did not cause a problem with my insurance at all. They even gave me the mammogram free - I didn't have to pay my co-pay. Since my breast augmentation, I have changed insurance providers and there have been no problems or questions asked.

Your insurance company probably won't cover a complication of breast augmentations surgery. You assume all risks when you elect to have the procedure. Your health insurance only covers medical health issues.

Hi!
If I were you I wouldn't even mention it to them. I mean they don't HAVE to know and it wouldn't help anyway since they wouldn't cover anything having to do with your breast augmentation.

I live in So Cal and have Kaiser insurance. I don't know about silicone vs saline implants. I did ask call and ask if I'd be dropped by having a breast augmentation. They said no and that they would cover all life threatening complications due to a breast augmentation. They said that I could call and talk to their ps and ask for a breast augmentation. They said it would probably be no, but couldn't hurt to ask. I felt comforatble knowing that I still have Kaiser behind me if I needed them.

They would aslo do a mammogram if I chose. DH and I decided not to have the mamo. There has been no breast cancer in my family, ever. We decided that the risk of exposure before the breast augmentation was greater than the breast augmentation itself. I will still do monthly (daily) exams for changes and will keep my GP up to date.

I hope that this info helps.

My Aetna coverage through work will cover the special post-breast augmentation mammograms and any complications from surgery that cause a medical as opposed to a cosmetic problem (excessive bleeding, infection, etc.)
