I can only take 5 days off work-is it enough?

I'm having my breast augmentation done on wed (21/05) and planning to return to work on Tuesday. I'm having overs done. My work is not physical and doesn't involve heavy lifting. However I need to feel well because I work with people. Do you think 5 days should be enough?

I went back to work 11 days after my surgery...I had partial unders placed. I had to be on "light duty" until I saw my ps for my one month post-op. I would guess if you aren't taking narcotics for pain , you might be ok. Ask your ps and see what he thinks.

I had the exact same amount of time off as you will have. Had 'em done on a Wednesday and back to work Tuesday. I had to do some things a bit differently (I did do lifting, but nothing heavy) and not move too quick, but I definitely felt good enough to deal with customers. I was tired by the time I went home, and didn't get much done at home, but it got better by the day. Oh-I was completely off pain pills, just taking tylenol if I needed it. Everyone heals differently, but I would guess you'll be fine.

I had them done on a Thursday and went back to classes on the following Tuesday. It was not fun but it was doable, I just got a ride to and from. I was still on painkillers but I wasn't really too tired, the only thing I had trouble with was opening doors. I don't think anyone would have known I had just had surgery.

I just had mine this past Thursday and could easily go back to work tomorrow (Monday) and I had complete unders. I haven't had to take any pain med just Tylenol. Everyone is different but I think you will be fine.

That's how much time I had off for partial unders, and I was ok, just definitely moving a lot slower and carefully that first week back. You just need to be gentle with yourself. I'm sure you'll be fine, especially considering you're getting overs.

Hi Anita,

From what I have gathered, it's okay since you'll be having overs. It would be ideal if someone could drive you to and from work (or take the bus), there would be no lifting of stuff and if your arms are kept close to your body as much as possible.

Good luck!

Angel

I took 5 days off as well, I felt like crap but it was doable. I was still on meds, that also kept me from feeling normal.

I had 5 days off, went back for two days and on the third day got to work in pain and was sent home. I saw my ps and he insisted on another 4 days off. So I'm now back to work again in not tomorrow but the next day. I thought I would be fine but obviously not. Luckily my boss was pretty supportive.

Anita,

Everyone is different, I have complete unders , had my breast augmentation on a Thursday and went back to work on Tuesday. I never took the pain meds, and it is a 27 mile commute to work, I was tired at the end of the day but I was just fine. Hope it all goes well but remember do what is right for YOU!

I had overs as well...

Had my breast augmentation on a Tuesday and went back to work the following Monday. I even drove myself there.

To be honest, it wasn't that bad and I had to stop myself from overdoing it. People talked about not being able to turn the wheel and what not but I didn't really have an issue.

I too feel everyone is different and it seems there is less pain faster recovery if you have overs. I had unders and had surgery on Thursday and was working on Tuesday (I have a desk job). It was a little tough turning the steering wheel - definitely hard to open car doors, office doors. I was pretty tired the first few days at work, but as time went on it got better.
Just pay attention to your own body it will let you know if you are pushing it too much. Take care.

The main thing is to listen to your body and take it easy. If you rest up and do all the right things you will be fine, just don't over do it!

It varies on everyone. I had mine done on a Friday, I was able to do things on my own on Monday. It was doable, but unable to drive, but was able to do little things. Good luck

Thank you all for the replies--it calmed me down a lot. At this stage taking time off work is the biggest worry for me as I have only started working recently and don't want to take too much time off. I'm even thinking of going back on monday.

I have overs and I think you will be hugely tired, but ok. I had my surgery on a Friday and I drove on Wednesday and took my kids to friendlys and the mall for a bit. (it was school vaca) I went out shopping full force on saturday. I mean you will be achy and a bit sore for like 4 weeks but you should be ok to work, do you sit at your job or stand?

I totally agree........I felt really good, did too much, and develop a bruise......so that scared me enough to slow down. I think the key for you is drink tons of water after (I did and I swear I flushed the anesthesia out faster) and take it really easy, I mean do NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING. The only thing I did was I walked the halls of the hospital within 5 hours after the surgery and took slow walks every hour. When I got home the next day I didnt do anything (it killed me I have 6 kids and I am a totally neat freak!) except every hour I got up to pee and walk around a bit.

I'm worried about going back too! I'm having surgery the day after you and going back on Tuesday as well. I'm having unders. I asked my PS specifically about how long I would need to take off and he seemed to think it would be enough. He uses a different procedure called Transaxillary BAAM - Balloon Assisted Augmentation Mammoplasty. It's supposed to have less post-op pain. Guess I will see! I am in IT support and really hope I don't have to move equipment around that week. I will just have to ask for help I guess but really would like to avoid having to say why I can't lift!!!
