Congrats on your BA! We have similar stats, so that's cool too! I think your body will take up to a week to get back to normal, and not everyone experiences the same level of constipation... You can just wait it out or take meds when you feel like you're overdue to go

i started on milk of mag on day 1 PO because i wanted to avoid getting constipated. i took a half dose. no results (i forgot that the day of BA i only ate crackers & water from nausea), so day 2 PO i took a full dose and regreted it. it felt like i was peeing out my a$$ (i had no pain, just had to go all the time). i had been eating healthy & drinking tons of water & probably wouldn't of had problems, but i was afraid of the other. best of luck!

I was soooo bloated by my third day PO, but I just kept eating things high in fiber...fruit, raisin bran, bread that was "double the fiber". Nothing worked, so on my fifth day PO I took two laxatives that my mom had brought to me. I didn't have any on hand...never had a problem w/this before Anyway, I took them early that day and by the end of the day I was cleaned out and feeling MUCH better. I don't know when in the world I would have gone if I hadn't taken those laxatives...God bless my mom!!!! Anyway, that's how it worked for me. HTH!!!

Stool softners isn't a laxative... it will just make the process of going # 2 more comfortable. I was eating high fiber foods and even taking liquid fiber. I had a good BM on day #2 and thought - oh good, I've got movement going... then constipation hit and boy was it painful. So, my recomendation is to take your stool softner now. I was sitting on toilet for over 30 min -struggling...had DH go to store to get it and then was so sad to hear it takes 12 hours to kick in... fortunately I was also drinking lots of water while waiting for DH to return from store - so it eventually did do its job - like 20 min. later..! HTH! I feel like I'm the poster girl for stool softners now!! LOL!

I took stool softeners from when I got home from surgery and it didn't really help...I think day 4 I finally ate a whole bunch of prunes and the next day I was cleaned out...

I started on a softner two days post-op. I didn't wait for the "C" to happen. Didn't want to have to take much effort for BM if you know what I mean. I had no trouble at all.

I didn't take anything after surgery boy did I regret that, I thought it would be ok. Well I took to Corectol, and that didn't move anything, so I got my huband to get me some magnisum citrate that work even though since I hadn't gone in 4 days I still sat there for awhile before any relief. Keep taking stool softeners because until you do go you will be bloated.

Mineral Oil!

My ps told me to take 1 tablespoon before going to bed at night the day after surgery and I had absolutely no constipation, gas, bloating, nothing. That stuff is wonderful. You can buy it at Walgreens and it is odorless and tasteless, and it worked wonders.

I highly recommend taking it. The way I look at it your miserable enough as it is, no need to make it worse.

Hope everything comes out okay

Take care,
Josie
