Washing your hair the week after surgery....

Hey girls-

How did you manage washing your hair after your BA's??

I haven't washed mine since Thursday morning and know that I HAVE to today. I don't have a DH or bf to do it- my best guy friend has been taking care of me and just would rather do it myself as I feel bad for depending so much on him already the past four days. Is it going to hurt my boobs to be lifting my arms over my head like that???

I'm taped under my breasts and it goes up between them and am also worried about that getting too wet and coming off. The good thing is that I don't need to worry about the incision because mine was in my belly button and is pretty much healed.

Should I just take a deep breath, get in the shower and just do it??

You don't have to worry about the tape - my PS told me water actually activates the adhesive so when you sweat or get wet, it will hold on tighter. But that's just what she told me.

I think it will feel weird lifting your arms up, but just make sure you're comfortable with it and don't feel anything that hurts. I could pull shirts on over my head and shower by myself at 3 days. Hope this helps!!

You should be totally OK. I had crease incision and still had the steri strip on day 4 (took it off in the shower the following day and was showering the day after surgery). It's super strong and shouldn't come off.

I saw some things about not raising your hands over your head for 2 weeks, my PS never mentioned it, so I was doing it as soon as it was comfortable...and I would find that almost impossible to avoid lol. You should be OK, but if you are worried, just call your PS office and ask them, that's what they are there for

My first few days, I was calling my PS office like twice a day with weird questions of what can I do. I only needed my BF to wash my hair the day after...a few days later by day 4, I was totally independent in that department. I'm totally OK washing my hair...shaving underarms is another story though lol due to side boob.

Hope that helps...

After my surgery I felt really light-headed whenever I took a shower, and if I took my bra off I felt like my implants would fall out. I tried to get my husband to wash my hair but he started washing it with conditioner so I just ended up doing it myself. I wore a sports bra I'd put in the laundry afterwards (so it didn't matter if it got wet) and I had to sit down on the floor and lean my head forward because it hurt to reach high up. So just a few things to consider there, you should be able to do it yourself though.

Did your PS instruct you on whether you can wet the tapes or not? If you can't I'd suggest sitting down on the floor and leaning back as far as possible, only getting your hair and back wet so no water would come in touch with the tapes.

LDH will become famous soon enough
My PS told me not to lift my arms for the first couple of weeks. Not all PSs follow the same school of thought. I didn't mind, because I COULDN'T lift my arms during those first two weeks.

As for washing hair. Just bend your head to the side or front, and bend your elbow to wash your hair, keeping your arms close to your body. That is what was most comfortable for me when my DH wasn't there to do it.

I don't think you have to worry about the tape, but ask your PS. If they said you could shower today, then it is probably fine.

Hey girl, don't you just HATE having dirty hair...I couldn't take it after the 3rd day...luckily I had my DH who helped to wash me (Even two weeks later! lol..yes I'm spoiled!!) Anyhoo I know you mentioned you had a best guy friend that's been helping you and you said you felt bad relying on him still, but is it just that or would you be comfortable having him wash your hair? If you are comfortable with him washing you, I say ask him....seriously, would hate for you to overexert yourself or get dizzy/fall etc...Or at least have him nearby in case you do get dizzy etc...I just stood with my back to the shower head and so the spray washing splashing directly on the boobies? Just kind of cascading over? so just tilt your head back enough...seriously don't try to do too much...you won't be needing like a intense scalp shampooing...you just want to feel cleanse right?

I went to a local salon up the street from my house and had it washed and straightened there (I have a ton of hair and it is pretty long so washing it is pretty involved.) It was heaven. No lifting my arms and she helped me in and out of the hair washing chair. My hair looked fabulous and I didn't have to worry about bending, lifting or doing any damage. (I did shower a day post-op when my PS said it was ok.)

yeah i took a shower 2 days after my BA and it wasnt hard for me to do it at all. i have my bf here but i didnt need him.. i just did it very slowly and it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be. i know they say not to raise ur arms over ur head for 2 weeks but u just kinda have to when u wash ur hair. and dont worry about getting the tape wet.. when i had my steri strips in before they got taken out, my ps just told me to take a shower and not to worry about getting them wet and try to blowdry them afterwards.. but on a cool setting bc ur kinda numb right there and dont wanna burn urself.. i know it is best to get ur hair washed at a salon and i would have done that if i couldnt do it myself but it wasnt as bad as u would think..

I went to the salon and had the lady there wash my hair for me. She laughed and said she wished she would of thought to go to a salon when she had her ba.

I showered on day 2, and everything went fine. My PS said just to be careful with putting my arms above my head, so I just put my head to the side in the shower. Good luck girl!

I can't remember when I washed my hair. The first few days after surgery are hazy. Either I just did it myself or DH helped me. I know he was there in the shower with me the first time. If you don't feel comfortable, make an appointment with your hair dresser to wash and blowdry your hair for you.

i thinkyou will be ok to do it... my ps never mentioned anything about not lifting my arms so i just took a shower a day after like he said to and the strips arent goin anywhere anytime soon. i think if ur uncomfortable, just ask ur guy friend! im sure he wouldnt mind. and it still is kind of awkward when i take a shower.. im afriad of getting them too hott or anything. so im just takin it easy in there. not too long of a shower. good luck!

it does take a little while to get used to washing your hair after BA.. but I just slouched my neck as much as possible, hope that makes sense.. kind of bring your head down as much as possible, keeping your arms kind of tucked at your side, and scrub with your fingers as much as possible..
After my first shower.. I felt WORLDS better.

Hey girls! I've been showering which makes me feel better for sure (aside from the aches and soreness afterward!) but the hair thing is still not working for me. Bathing my body literally makes my breasts throb and at that point I just don't think it's wise to raise my arms and wash my hair....

Tomorrow my friend and I will do it. He told me he would- I think he's actually looking forward to doing it! lol. Thanks for the advice. Hopefully soon I'll be able to do it on my own.

Dry shampoo has become my best friend btw- (Ojan run out cleanser has been working perfectly!)

The shower helped me - mostly because I think the heat relaxed the muscles some.

As for hair washing - it was odd for me to lift my arms...so I kept the elbows tucked real tight into my sides and tilted my head. I'm not sure how good I washed it because I couldn't put a lot of pressure on my scalp to scrub, but it did the job.

You might want to make sure your friend is nearby in the other room in case you do get dizzy. I had a few bouts with dizziness, but I think it was more from getting used to the girls, the GA, etc...

wow, I hadn't thought about showering or washing my hair afterwards and how difficult it might or might not be. My ps said it is fine the day after surgery, thank god, lol. My DH has a few days off so that is good that he will be there to help if necessary.

Very informative thread!
