Question How to know if just a bruise or if actually a hematoma?

Hey Ladies,

So about 4 days ago I noticed a bruise under my left breast. Since then the bruise has gotten slightly larger (about 2 times the size of a quarter) and darker (black/blue/purplish). However, I havent noticed any swelling, the area isnt painful, or hot to touch. I really dont know whether I should be worried or not. It seems normal to have bruises, I just dont know how you tell the difference between a normal bruise and a hematoma?

I called my PS office and they said once my leftie wasnt 3 times larger than my righty i.e. significant swelling I should probably be okay. I was suppose to go for a post op memorial weekend, since I flew out of town for surgery but now they want me to try and get back down there ASAP. I am worried about it, but at the same time, dont think it merits a $400 ticket especially when I will be going back 2 weeks later. I asked if I could email a picture, and based of that, if they still thought it necessary I would come down. Is that reasonable?

For the ladies who experienced a Hematoma, was the bruise small or really big? How swollen did it get? Did you take medication or get it drained? Do you think if I start taking some Arnica pills that may help? I am just trying to see whether or not this is just a simple bruise, or a complication in the early stage.

Thanks for everything

WOW...sorry you are going through this!!! I had a fairly significant bruis on one of mine, that took a while to go away, and I had to go have my PS take a look. He explained the worse case scenerio to me...but then it went away. So I never had to have anything done about it. Mine hurt, and mine was very sore to the touch. It was not warm/hot to the touch though. I would say you should send in a pic, and let them take a look, just for something to go off of. And then let them tell you if they still think it would be an emergency for you to comee back!!! And if they say yet...certainly you should be looked at...just to make sure! Good luck, and I really hope it is just a bruise, and nothing more major! Please keep us informed!

I have very bad bruising as well. Mine is very swollen underneath also. It almost looks like a bottom out or double bubble. Will this go away??

MissNewBooty- I am in pretty much the same boat as you! Thank you so much for your post.

I am about four days PO and was in a car accident today. My right breast started to swell a bit, and I called my PS right away. I am from NYC and my PS is in Utah, so we are similar in that aspect as well! They had me email in pics. Because I have tried to avoid looking at my breasts so far (to avoid freaking out about swelling, etc) I was shocked when I went to take the photos. On both breasts along the bottom there is slight bruising, but on my right there is one large DARK spot, about the same size as yours. I have no idea if it is a bruise or a hematoma.

My PS called me after reviewing my pictures. He pretty much said the same as yours- to watch for swelling, with a hematoma one breast will get pretty much twice the size of the other, and to watch for increase in pain. He said we will hope for the best, but to keep him posted.

Have you decided what you are going to do?? I actually had not planned on flying back to Utah again (my ticket would be about the same cost as yours) but maybe it seems like a smart thing to do..

Updates appreciated

Just to add.. I will try to post up pictures of mine so you can compare with yours. Feel free to FR me.

I have been taking Arnica Montana and Bromelain supplements all along, but can't say with certainty if they are helping our situation.

I had a bunch of bruising that came up around 7 to 10 days post op. You are doing the right thing just watching and waiting. If the bruise is purple, the blood is clotting. If it is red, then it is not. I had a very red and tender bruise under my armpit in addition to all the bruises that didn't hurt. Everything went away in time, but right now you are playing the waiting game. Take it easy and let your body heal, and keep in touch with your PS!! It took up to and maybe a little over a month for all my bruising to disappear.

I have albums of my bruising, if you want to see send a friend request. You have to click on show all albums to see the earliest.

Also wanted to say that I started using arnica gel at around two weeks, and it helped with the pain on the bruise under my arm and seemed to lighten the other bruises significantly.

With my hematoma I had no bruising.. Go figure. I just starting swelling. My right breast got 4x the size of left. I also had 350+ blood in that breast. Also I was running fevers around 103. Very sick person. Also very painful.

I'm 8 days post op and am wondering if I may have a Hematoma in my right breast. You say you had no bruising? Any slight discoloration? Where was your hematoma located?

My possible hematoma is on top of the breast, where the implant sits. I have some annoying swelling and it feels like I have a rock in there, but no bruise-like color, just a very slight reddish color. It's either this or a bacterial infection for me...

It was at the top of my breast behind the implant. It started to swell and kept increasing in size. I never had any discoloration. I just felt like poo everyday. I ran a fever 24 hrs a day. I wish u all the best. Call your PS ASAP if you suspect anything like a hematoma.
