Calling all smokers.... current or former
Hey there, I have read a lot of conflicting info on the effects of smoking before & after a BL/BA. I quit smoking about two weeks ago. My BL/BA is scheduled three weeks from now. Is that enough time? I have heard that you should wait three months before you get the surgery. My PS said 4 weeks is plenty of time. Have any of you quit smoking before a BL? How long did you wait? And did you have any complications healing because of it? Thanks!!!

I think 4 weeks is plenty of time. Smoking interferes with the oxygen levels in your blood. When you smoke, all of your tissues get less oxygen than they need to survive, especially after a surgical procedure. If you do happen to start smoking again, I would reschedule the surgery. Necrosis is not a complication you want to deal with.

Hello! I quit smoking about two weeks prior to my surgery. I have to admit though... I did cheat... I had a cigarette the day before my BA/BL. But I'm happy to say that I haven't gone back. I've been smoke free for about two months now. I had complications (hematoma), but I really don't know if it's linked to my smoking.

Congratulations to you!! I didn't manage to stop, (luckily I didn't have any problems from it,) I would think 5 weeks is more than enough time for the oxygen flow to get up to full strength!
