![]() | Saline or silicone?
My breast augmentation date is Nov. 3 and I have been really torn between saline or silicone. I know silicone is supposed to feel more natural but I worry about having to get MRI's every couple of years or getting sick from the silicone. But I've heard silicone implants have been greatly improved. On the other hand I worry saline unders won't feel natural to me or my husband. I'm so torn. Any input would be really appreciated.

do some looking on youtube for videos on silicone and saline implants. i found it very helpfull! i dont think you could get sick from the silicone - the old style silicone yes but not the new. there are pro's and con's on both sides, so you need to weigh up what is best for you. ![]() good luck!! |

Thanks! I'll check out youtube. Do you think the fears with silicone is an american thing? Do you find less women are concerned about this in Australia or do you think it's about the same?

The new silicone is not the same as the old & saline still has a silicone shell. My PS & the 2 others I saw all told me that the US is the only country that still uses silicone. You have to do your research & find whats best for you. I have silicone & at 5months they feel so natural, but other who have saline have said the same. alot depends on how much natural breast tissue you have, I didn't have any so the chances of rippling were higher w/ me if I chose saline. I personally waited to get my breast augmentation done until silicone was available again, I never wanted saline. hth

I'm getting silicone because I have little to no breast tissue left after breast feeding to boys, but I wanted silicone because it suppose to feel and look more natural than saline. Good Luck!

![]() | Hi, I am in Canada here and this silicone stigma is definitely American imo. I have no fear whatsoever wrt my silicones (made by Mentor) and got them because they were highly recommended by my surgeon, who affirmed that 95% of his BAs are done using silicone...

But in saying that, many people aren't aware that the new silicone is completly different from the old. | |

Now I'm leaning towards silicone. I better make up my mind one way or the other as my surgery date is Nov. 3rd. Thank you all so much for letting me know what you think.

Hey!! I know you've already heard this from the other Aussie Ladies, but the first PS i went to havent used Saline in over 8 years.. Barely anywhere has the option to go with Saline here. Silicone has been greatly improved over the years IMO - definitely the way to go..HTH! |

After doing research IMO silicone is soo much safer than saline. I have no fear of having silicone implants. On top of that, it feels and looks so much more natural than the majority of saline imlants. My PS encouraged me to use silicone and said "BAs have been looking so much better since silicone came back on the market."

![]() | Definitely a typo. I slept on it last night and still feel good about going with silicone. I called the office this morning and made the switch. There is still a stigma with silicone but everything I research about it makes me think its just that - bad vibes from the past that aren't relevant anymore. That's just my opinion. I'm going to go with my gut. What about mri's? Do any of you get mri's periodically to make sure there is no rupture? Thanks again everyone!!!

![]() | Me too!
I need to make the choice soon too. I am in BC, Canada, and the one ps I am going to said that the majority of his patients still choose saline, however, *he* prefers to use silicone. From an esthetics point of view, I prefer silicone, but I do have concerns about rupture. I have seen the video (some good ones on here), but since the silicone is so gummy like, I wonder how long a rupture will go unnoticed and if undetected, what harm even teeny bits of silicone can have. I have a consult on Oct 21, so I will be grilling the ps about it. I really hope that I am satisfied with his answers, b/c I want silicone! I am a bit relieved to find out silicone is pretty much the choice in Australia and Europe. I am not going to have my breast augmentation until early in the new year (hopefully Feb!!), so I still have time to decide. Good luck on your choice. Shaz |

I have had both. I had salines for 10 years and in July I switched to silicone and the difference is HUGE! They feel fantastic!!! You will love the silicone implants.

My PS says silicone is so much better than saline. And if you're not at risk for breast cancer, then it's a definite must! He also said that I could go 7 years before I get an MRI and that the 3 year thing was just a precaution from the manufacturer being extra cautious as to not get sued! Definitely go with silicone! I hear it's worth all the money! And its what I'm getting two months from tomorrow!!! Yay!

I have silicone and love it.. I was dead set on saline in the beginning, but after much research, talking to my PS and talking to people who had both, I went with sils.. I can deal with having an MRI done... I think the thing I liked most aside from how sils felt in comparison to saline was that my implants were going in already filled, unlike saline, which has a self sealing valve due to being filled during surgery. I knew that the rupture rate was slim to none with sils.. I think you'd basically have to stab/slice me in the boob with a butcher knife to puncture them... Another deciding factor was my cousin, who because of complications had to have a revision.. she began her breast augmentation with saline, but during her last revision switched to sils.. She said there is a world of difference and she wished she had gone with sils from the get-go. Each lady will be an advocate for her type of implant.. I prefer sils, but the next lady may prefer saline.. Make judgement based on how YOU feel after researching and talking to anyone and everyone you can! |
