I believe they are the same thing. Generally, going under the muscle will cause you to appear about 50cc's smaller because the implant is being compressed by the muscle. Be sure to take that into consideration!

![]() | No they are not the same thing. Here is a description Subpectoral breast implants (dual plane implants) are surgically placed in a modified submuscular/subglandular combination position. Normal full submuscular placement positions the implant completely under the pectoralis muscles, while this modified placement locates the prosthesis partially under the pectoralis major muscle and partially in the subglandular position. Basically, subpectoral is half and half placement. Submuscular is fully under. Hope to help!

Although girls with overs, or subpectoral can achieve natural results. To achieve the most natural full unders submuscular is the way to go. Although its not 100% this placement almost reduces risk of many complications I have submuscular, full unders. You can FR me to see pics if you want.

submuscular: less complications, less capsular contracture, more natural appearance. under the muscle. longer recovery. subpectoral: quicker recovery, is over the muscle. increases ptosis. dual plane: submuscular on the upper part of the implant, subpectoral on the lower. looks like submuscular. subfascial: implant covered with the very superficial layer of the muscle. looks like submuscular. hope it helps =) |

Hi Ani, I believe subpectoral is the same as sub-muscular as the breast muscle is called pectoralis major. What you meant is sub-glandular which is over the muscle. As silicon implants were banned in the US, most surgeons switched to sub-muscular placements as the saline implants have to be overfilled to prevent rippling, creating more visible edges. Sub-muscular helps cover the implant as there is an additional layer on top - not just your breast tissue. In cases where there is enough existing tissue and you use a silicon implant the result can actually be more natural above the muscle for some women. the muscle does not cover the whole breast anyway. It is only in the upper part. imagine a clock, then the area of 8 o'clock to 2 clock are covered by the muscle. In a natural breast there is no tissue under the muscle therefore the specific bounce and behavior of natural breasts is actually best emulated by above the muscle placement. BUT only with lots of existing tissue. Stretch test of more than 3cm is a good starting point. Also mostly for moderate profile implants. The higher projection implants (mod + and high profile) are best covered by the muscle as they otherwise have too much bulge on the top. over the muscle and under the muscle have both advantages and disadvantages, so you should talk to your surgeon about what is best for you. He will likely measure the thickness of your existing tissue and then discuss your options. good luck! Serana | |
