Can I take cough & cold medicine 2 days prior surgery?

Help, I am just a mess! I got my period.. now my throat is starting to get itchy out of nowhere!! and I'm 2 days before surgery!! my gosh I've been waiting for the day and nothing is going to stop it!

I looked on my list of the meds I need to avoid prior surgery but I thought I should ask here first before taking it since I'm unsure..

I've been trying to drink lots of orange juice and vitamin c.. any tips would be great thank u

So sorry to hear your getting sick right before surgery! I would call your PS first thing Monday. They can probably give you a prescription for something that won't cause problems during surgery. Good luck!

All of my paperwork says not to take anything either. Esp. anything with Ibuprofen or aspirin in it. I always swear by spoonfuls of honey when my kids or I get cold or sore throats. Maybe gargle some salt water too?

My pre op sheet said to avoid anything with ibuprofen and medication of that sort (advil, aspirin, motrin, etc) because it may thin your blood. I think cough & cold medicine should be fine but you should call just to make sure. I took ni-quil the night before my surgery because I was waaaay too anxious to sleep! And I was just fine. I don't see why cough and cold medicine would be any different

went throught the same thing!!!!!

here is what you can take, tylenol. I would stop taking vitamin c though, this is a blood thinner. don't worry you will be fine! here is what you can do that works and saved me. I got the worse sinus infection about less than a week ahead, an abscessed wisdom tooth that week, and my throat got sore from the nasal drip. SALT WATER. I did salt water gargles and it helped my throat. Some people do salt water and hydrogen peroxide gargles never tried that. i also did nettie pot, sort of. I got an aspirator bulb (for babies) and filled it with warm salt water and put my head on the side and on the nostril that is closes to the ceiling put the water in and it comes out the other side. I did it a lot and it just killed that infection. drink tons of water because it honestly will get rid of everything, avoid milk, builds up mucus, and if you have a fever honestly let it runs it course. It is working to kill what you have! they will do the surgery as long as you don't have mucus in your chest, and a fever day of surgery. You should still be okay. I had to have the surgery on the date, friend was flying in to help that honestly I think I willed it away! good luck this is common don't freak out yet!

I second that! You don't want potential infection to complicate your BA. The cold meds would just mask your condition and not take it away. Please talk to your PS, there is some nasty flus and colds going around.

I had allergies and my PS said benadryl and claratin was fine.

You should definitely tell you PS. Then they can put you on antibiotics just in case!

My PS said they reschedule surgeries if patients have a fever.
