Pro biotics after surgery...

Hi girls,

Just wondering if anyone was recommended to take pro biotics after surgery with your antibiotics?

I usually get a really upset stomach from antibiotics until I stop taking them and also, sorry for TMI, thrush

So I'm wondering if pro biotics like Inner Health Plus or something are safe to take straight after surgery???

I don't really know on the probiotics part, but for the thrush I got that while I was nursing my son and just ate TONS of garlic and that helped it go away super fast. It was also around my nipples but in my sons mouth and throat. we did the same for him and he cleared up faster than I did. The only remedy I found to help the thrush on the outside is apple cider vinegar dabbed on quite a few times a day. But thats if the thrush isn't in your mouth...HTH?!

My doc simply recommended that I eat yogurt with lots of probiotics in it. I drank Keifer & ate Dannon light & fit yogurt for the entire time I was taking the antibiotics & never had an issue. HTH

Taboo will become famous soon enough
Probiotics should always be taken after antibiotics, and there shouldn't be any reason why you can't take them right after surgery (unless you get some formula that has herbs or something that might interact with drugs - typical probiotics should be fine). You could also ask your PS about taking Nystatin.

Definitely! Take the probiotics. I'd take both the lacobacillus and the acidophilus.

Another natural product that can help is a soybean paste cold in health food stores. It is called "miso" and is the paste used in that delicious soup served as an appetizer in Japanese restaurants.

Miso has natural enzymes in it that help coat the intestines with all kinds of the good flora you lose thorugh taking antibiotics. It also helps with just about any intestinal problem you can name. It comes in different flavors, the "mellow white" is my favorite... tastes almost like pototato soup.

You buy it in the refrigerator section of helath food stores. Take one heaping teaspoon per cup of hot water, stir it up in your cup.. then either drink or, like I do, add some pepper to it so it seems like soup.

Greta pick-me-up and it's giving you all those good probiotics as well!

A great probiotic is Kefir. Its great to drink everyday, original or flavored if you like fruit yogurt. You can buy it at a whole foods market, and sometime Safeway and/or Luckys carry it. Just my advise as its healthier than yogurt.

I take a probiotic everyday and mentioned it during my pre-op. The nurse recommended I continued to take it after surgery due to possible yeast infections and other issues from the antibiotics.

Hi Littlebird, I'd recommend taking some Inner health plus with you. It definitely wouldn't hurt to take that.

I'd also take a Canesoral 'once only' tablet with you just in case you do get thrush. You can get them at the Chemist without a script here in Aus & it would be good to have with you just in case!

My PS didn't recommend probiotics but I take them every day anyways b/c I'm lucky enough to suffer from ulcerative colitis. Taking those, eating fruits and yogurt and drinking a ton of water I believe led to me not being constipated for too long (2 days only.) It couldn't hurt!

Thanks girlies And thanks LilyM - I will definitely get to the chemist and get some inner health plus and canesoral.. I have the longest list of things I need to get from the chemist before I go - the list is a page long hahaah.

Not sure how I am going to fit it all in my bags! lol.

How are you finding your boobies LilyM? Which PS did you use? I'm getting my blood works done next Sunday, about 5 weeks before I leave so if there is anything funny I will know well in advance and if its something like low iron levels etc I can just get some tablets for the next few weeks.. so much to think about lol.

xx

Just wondering, and this may be a silly question.. but should I start takeing Inner Health Plus (probiotics) straight after surgery while I am on antibiotics, or after I have finished the anitibiotics? I thought I read somewhere the antibiotics are not as effective if you take the probiotics at the same time but maybe I was reading about something else.

If you're prone to getting thrush after taking antibiotics then it would be a good thing to use. This is what you should do to dramatically reduce the likelihood of getting thrush.

1. Tell the doctor to use a loading dose of antibiotics for the surgery only. A strong new generation cephalasporin.
2. Do not take antibiotics preventatively after the procedure. It has been shown to increase the risk of complications. The reasoning is that by being on antibiotics for a long time, all the good bacteria in your body is killed leaving space for the really bad ones.
3. Take 2 probiotic daily starting 1 week before surgery. Swisse has a good new range.
4. Buy canestan 6 day cream just in case you get it.

That should keep the candida at bay =D

antibiotics

I plan on taking probiotics. I have a Mitral Valvue Prolapse so the doc will definately be giving me antibiotics. I am going to load up on the probiotics and yoghurts to prevent hopfully......any yeast!
