Mine is on Wed, and I can totally sympathize.
Onion and garlic were both on my list. Starting about 2 weeks preop, I started to just be a little careful about what I eat. I am eating lots of salads and vegetable soups so I won't go into surgery constipated. But as far as onions go, it is so hard to avoid them, so I am trying not to worry too much about it.
I honestly think a psychological health is really important going in and recovering from the surgery. So I will do my best to follow my PS's recommendations, but especially those instructions that vary by PS (like onions and garlic), I don't worry too much about it.
It's like anything else my regular health provider tells me. I should be eating veges, beans, white meat, etc. and avoid red meat, junk food, soda, etc. I try to stick to his advice but do enjoy "avoid" stuff in moderation. I can probably be in a better health but it is good enough right now.
I haven't heard anyone having serious complications or extremely difficult recovery because they ate onions or garlic. So, I do my best to avoid them but I am not worried if I eat them.
