Onions?

I have been really good about not taking anything on the list as far as medications. I have been tryignt o eat fairly healthy this week and drink lots of water too. Surgery is on Tuesday.

Last night I had fajitas which had grilled onions. Somehow I missed onions were on the no no list. (I even remembered garlic was on there).

I am praying I didn't just do somethign dangerous. Do I need to reschedule?

I dont know why onions would be on the no no list. I eat onions in every meal and I had them every night the week before surgery. Maybe someone else can clue me in on why they are a no no. I am sure that you will be fine. Its just one time and Im sure you are not the only person that has done an oops and went threw with surgery just fine.

I've read cosuming onions and garlic even moderately can have negative effects on the body during surgery. But if it was just a little and your surgery isn't tomorrow I wouldn't worry bout it. You'll poop it right out by then!

Wow. Well I guess this really shows that all PS are different because I didnt have a list of food I couldnt eat. I was told no medication at all but never anything about food. WOW.

I haven't gotten my pre op papers yet, I read it somewhere else, but I hope it doesn't say anything about onions. I LOVE onions!

I could be wrong, but I believe it thins you blood a tiny bit. I did not have onions on my list, but I did have garlic on it. You can always call your PS to check, but I don't think it will be a problem at all.

Mine is on Wed, and I can totally sympathize.

Onion and garlic were both on my list. Starting about 2 weeks preop, I started to just be a little careful about what I eat. I am eating lots of salads and vegetable soups so I won't go into surgery constipated. But as far as onions go, it is so hard to avoid them, so I am trying not to worry too much about it.

I honestly think a psychological health is really important going in and recovering from the surgery. So I will do my best to follow my PS's recommendations, but especially those instructions that vary by PS (like onions and garlic), I don't worry too much about it.

It's like anything else my regular health provider tells me. I should be eating veges, beans, white meat, etc. and avoid red meat, junk food, soda, etc. I try to stick to his advice but do enjoy "avoid" stuff in moderation. I can probably be in a better health but it is good enough right now.

I haven't heard anyone having serious complications or extremely difficult recovery because they ate onions or garlic. So, I do my best to avoid them but I am not worried if I eat them.

Good luck on your surgery on Tuesday!

Wow, I have never heard of this no no list! Thank GAWD! Lol! Other than "Don't eat after midnight before your surgery," food wasn't mentioned. My PS has 25 years experience and studied at John Hopkins so I trust her opinion.

I've read it is because they alter the blood glucose level. I honestly wouldn't worry about it. It probably isn't ideal, but if you're healthy, I highly doubt it would make a difference for you. HTH and GL with your surgery!!!!
