General Anesthesia - Sore throat after?

After general anesthesia, can anyone tell me how bad the breathing tube was down your throat? Did you have a sore throat afterward?

If they wouldn't have told me, I would have had NO idea it was there except for waking up with a sore DRY throat. I think my throat hurt for 2 days then it went away. Just drink tons of water

I really don't want to scare you, but my throat was very sore after my surgery. I felt no other pain that whole day and part of the following day besides my throat. I was not expecting that either since anesthesia wasn't much of a worry for me and I didn't really think about it....

The anesthesiologist puts you under first, so you don't even know you had to be intubated for the surgery. I've had multiple surgeries in the past for various reasons, and I've never felt any problems with my throat or my breathing after I wake up.

Congratulations on your upcoming procedure!!!

It just all depends on the anesthesiologist. With my BA, I couldn't tell at all when I woke up that I'd had a breathing tube in. Last year with my heart surgery though, my throat was very sore for a couple of days.

I had general too. My Doctor told me I could have a sore throat or dry throat after the surgery due to the tube. However, I had no sore throat at all. My mouth was like cotton mouth but I don't think it was due to that. I think it had something to do with one of the drugs they gave me before the surgery. Anyway I didn't feel anything or know there was anything in my mouth. Try not to worry about it. You will be in such a great deep sleep you won't even know anything is going on. You will come out of it just fine and if you do get a sore throat just drink plenty of fluids like Pink*Jemma suggested. Congrats!

My throat was sore for about two days. But it wasn't as bad as you would think after you had a tube in your throat for 2 hrs. I drank plenty of fluids and was fine.

i had a sore throat for just 1.5 days (mainly the day after surgery)... & it was gone the 2nd day post op when i woke up. it's not so bad because it usually goes away pretty fast. just drink plenty of water.

my first ba, they must have ripped the skin off the inside of my mouth because i had a huge blister (the slightest trauma in my mouth and i get canker sores )
so this time, i told them to be careful because that happened, and they assured me that they would be very careful not to do that again - so instead i have a very sore throat

i'd rather the latter *^_^* for me it's a small price to pay IF it even happens ... i do agree that it all comes down to the anesthesiologist

My throat was sore on just one side, which I thought was kind of strange.

My throat felt fine, but I did have a sore throat before the op so maybe that's why I didn't notice. I didnt even realise I had a breathing tube until I read this post.

I had a mild sore throat but I didn't feel it until 3 days later when I stopped the pain meds. It was not bad at all.

You will be under when they put it in and take it out, so you won't know you had it. But I did have a sore throat for a day or so... but when you are 1-2 days post op, a sore throat is the least of your problems.

I think it all depends on how rough they are putting it in. Ive had 5 surgeries and this was the ONLY one where my throat wasnt on fire..and i was able to swallow..I felt no pain.

I had oxygen through my nose but heard that other girls have recommended that cepacol throat spray that is a pain reliever and also popsicles to help deaden the pain.
