Percocet vs. Vicodin

My PS prescribed percocet for some reason. I've only taken vicodin in the past for surgeries. I know that percocet is stronger, but don't know much else about it. Did anyone experience constipation or other side effects on it? How much did you take, and for how long? I was prescribed 30 pills (5/325). He also gave me 15 Ambien for insomnia.

This was the first time for me on Percocets too. I was given 50 (5-325). I was allowed to take 2 every 4 hours. I took them faithfully like this for 2 days and then was only taking 1 every 6 hours or so and by day 4 was taking 1 at bedtime. Did that for about 2 days and then stopped taking them. I still have some left.

They made me sleepy so I would nap cause I didn't stay asleep for very long. I did get constipated but a laxative helped. Oh, and eat something when taking them or you might get sick. I was glad to have the stronger stuff. My pain was maybe a 2 or 3 on a scale of 1-10.

Ive always perfered vicodin to percocets. I had vicodin for my 1st BA and they did the trick nicely. I got some percocet when I had wisdom teeth pulled and I just remember them making me REALLY itchy for some reason. I hated taking them.

I am 4 days post op and took 1 percocet every 4 hours for the first 2 days. STILL constipated, was really itchy and have barely slept at all. Hense why I went off them.

to bad for me I can not take either I am allergic to it. I ended up in the hossy twice not gfrom BA but other surgeries that the Dr's insisted was just in my head or didn't eat !! That was neither the case. So I get hives extreme itching from head to bottom of feet, horrid vomiting etc. So I have 2 alternatives which is something they'd give you A in a hosptal or B when you wake up in recovery alkso allergic to codiene. I am not good with NARCS.

mine gave me 35. I took one every 3 hours (unless I was asleep) for like the first 3 days then I cut it back. Yes it did constipate me, but I would much rather have the percocet than the vicodin. I was given vicodin when I had my root canal and it barely helped with the pain from that. And I am kind of a baby when it comes to pain, but I felt like the percocet really took the edge off the pain.. I mean I was still sore and all but between the meds, ice, and heating pad(for your back) you will be good to go. You may be able to take some fiber supplement like citrcel or benefiber that could help you with that without the bad side effects. HTH!

Percocet is Oxycodone which is stronger than Hydrocodone and can be more addictive. they come in 5 or 10mg tabs and are simply oxycodone with tylonol aka acetaminophin (sp?) I think Oxycodone or Percocet works better, Vicodin always made me a little more "tripped out" But it's similar. for the short time u take it you shouldn't notice any real difference except that to most people it works better. (same drug that OxyContin is made from) Just be careful if you have any dependecy issues that run in ur family. I've taken both before and prefer Percocet. I think 5mg is plenty, so if you were given 10s (which i doubt, but maybe u were) don't be afraid to break them in half and they'll last longer that way. Just a different form of codiene- the strongest kind, whereas hydrocodone is the weakest, oxycodone is also the least likely to cause itching. But the constipation will be the same- I advise taking a stool softener- not laxative- just the colace off-brand "stool softener" bottle at walgreens or wal mart, wherever. just one a day to prevent constipation.

and if you are steady on your ambien there should be no problems with taking them together. just inform your doctor that you are on the ambien. I take Klonipin every night for sleep and I was fine. I know a lot about this because I've been on many pain meds for long-term injuries, my mom is a nurse and she has a back that is basically molded together from scoliosis surgery at age 16 ('67) so she takes the fentanyl patch and percodan (which is percocet but with asprin instead of tylonol) and has for the past 20something years. Just in case you were like "um... where's ur MD." lol I've learned a lot by going thru stuff.

I have taken percocet before but never vicodin. When I was 17 I had my wisdom teeth taken out and it was very painful. The dentist had to cut into my bone to remove the teeth. I was in so much pain and the percocet was just doing nothing for me, I couldn't even tell that I had taken it. The dentist told me that I could double the dose (sorry not sure what strength they were), and it made me feel really out of it. I guess it made me feel drowsy but I couldn't sleep because I was still in just as much pain! Really didn't help with the pain at all and I couldn't even stand up. I am not a fan of percocet. I think I am just strange though and most people I have talked to say percs work pretty well. I have also tried tramadol for pain. That's what I got for my first surgery. I told my PS that percocet didn't work for me so he gave me that. It was even more useless that the percocet and I didn't bother taking it after the first day. I might as well have taken a tylenol for all the good it did. I have tried other kinds as well in the past (but cannot remember what) with the same results. The only pain medication that has worked for me is the morphine I got right after surgery. I just hope I get something stronger this time for my revision surgery.

I took the percocet and it worked well. I have had vicodin in the past and had no problems with it either but I had NO argument with the doc about the med he chose for me. I had not experienced a BA before and I trusted that if he said I need percocet, I was gonna take the percocet lol. I did have some constipation but it was relieved with Miralax and prune juice.

Also, some people have stronger resistance to pain medications... certain things work better for differnert people. So for Kat, you may want to try something like Dilaudid for ur next surgery, (hydromorphone) isn't a kind of morphine but in the family of morphine just like hydrocodone (Vicodin) is in the family of Codeine... it's stronger that Percocet, and is similar to things like Morphine, Fentanyl and demerol.

You're definitely right, I do have a much stronger resistance to pain medications or any kind of drug in general. Sometimes I get a totally weird reaction too. Thanks for the suggestion, I will bring it up with my PS at my pre-op. The morphine family does seem to work a lot better for me for some reason and with the painful repair I'm having this time, I'm going to need something that works.

I can't take perks I get sooo sick. I told Dr. Revis' office that it has bad affects on me so I will be getting Vicodene she told me it is milder. The only side effects I know of are addiction to them. HTH.

I'm actually allergic to Percocet, but I can take Vicodin just fine. Percocet made me itch like crazy. It was almost as if though my entire body was inflamed. My skin became super itchy, hot and just plain irritated. I took it only for a few days until I realized I was having an allergic reaction. And yes, I did get constipated from it; same thing with Vicodin.

I'm not a fan of Vicodin, either. The thing is, it seems like I get used to it so fast. After a few days on it, it loses its potency and I have to up the dose.
For my last surgery, I believe I took Vicodin for maybe 3-4 days (sorry, my memory sucks!), and I still have pills left. I pop one every now and then when my cramps get really bad.

ETA: I also get crazy from taking pain meds, whether it's Percocets or Vicodin. I get super emotional and cry, or just plain angry...

Good question..I don't think I have ever had percocet but I have had vicodin for my wisdom teeth and they made me so nauseaus I couldn't take them..I will have to tell my ps so I can get something else..I am usually sensitive to a lot of medications..Everyone is different though...My husband ended up taking them for something else and they didn't bother him at all...

lortab btw is the same thing as vicodin/hydrocodone. just so ya'll know they all have many names. www.rxlist.com is a really informative site. As for constipation, any opiate is going to have that effect. my best advice is to take docusate sodium (aka: colace or stool softener) NOT senakot or dulcolax or any laxative. just the docusate. just take one a day and it should prevent u from getting stopped up. the worst thing is when u get days worth of blockage and have to somehow get that hard poo out it hurts sooo bad, so to prevent it is way better. 1-2 docusate sodiums a day will just make it more soft and not make your intenstines contract trying to push it out. Because you get dry in there and that's what makes you constipated, so to soften the stool will prevent that hard "block poop" that is always in the way of all the other stuff. very cheap this stool softener, and it's always in little geltabs so there's no taste. Best of all- so gentle, no pain!
