Question on average..when should one expect a re-do

reading a lot of stories here and becoming more and more aware of all the factors one should take into consideration. I also noticed one thing which kinda scares me... A LOT!

I've noticed that many of the ladies have had to go for re-do's (for different reasons of course) within 2 yrs on average of their 1st surgery.

I've never been through any type of surgery before, it defnitely scares me and I really wasn't expecting I'd have to go in for any re-dos before atleast 5 years (sans complications that is).

am I being too hopefull ? I

I know implanst don't last a lifetime, and I know a re-do is inevitable (im only 30yrs old so...) but it sounds a bit too dramatic to go in for sugery every 2 years on average

should I re-evaluate my expectaions of this whole thing...

I'm really worrying about this

anybody here who's had thiers for longer that 2 yrs and counting?

This would be good to know for me, as well. I was actually thinking I wouldn't need a re-do for 5-10 years@!!!!

I haven't had mine 2 yrs, just one year, but to be honest Lulu, yes, I have thought that , complications aside, I may need maybe one redo in my lifetime, but, you know, if I don't need it, I'm not having it...I've heard they can last years and years, it's once again, down to who's lucky and who's not...sad but realistic I think...I don't actually think about redo's, I'm going to cross that bridge as/when/if I come to it xxx

Two years between re-dos?! Yikes! I've never heard that. With no complications, or no re-do for size issues, 10-20 years is not unusual for the lifetime of implants. Possibly even longer with the quality of implants and their shells these days. I do think it is best to go into a breast augmentation knowing that you'll probably need more than one in your lifetime. Even at my age, I am not assuming I'll never need a re-do. It'd be nice, but I would rather expect one and NOT need it, that the opposite.
Not something I think about too often. If it happens, I'll deal with it then.

I hadn't planned on a re-do for at least 10-years... What changed my mind was that the way they looked after they dropped (at about 2 months post-op) wasn't what I was hoping for. I wanted to go a little bit bigger to get to where I wanted to be in the first place. I told my husband I would go through the whole summer before I made any decisions about scheduling another surgery, though. But then, at 4-months post-op I noticed my right implant was shifting towards my armpit. My PS confirmed it at 6-mo post, and we scheduled the repair/re-do a month later. Doing it within 12-months of my original surgery is saving me about $2,500 on the re-do, and the repair is not costing me anything. All that being said, I am still not planning any more surgeries unless I need one 10 or 15 or 20 years down the road. I'm confident that once I achieve the look I was hoping for initially, I'll be one satisfied customer!

many women get re-dos simply for size, which is fine, but also remember that just because many women get re-do's for size, it doesn't mean that you most likely will too...some people are never satisfied with anything (and i don't mean that offensively, despite how it reads). Just have realistic expectations and be true to what you want for your breasts.

i do not plan to have a re-do unless I medically had to and am thrilled with my results.

just to give you a hint my mother had her sugery early in the 80's...she came with me at my pre op appointment and ask the PS how she will know if something is wrong with her implants...he simply told her that if it is leaking...it will be obvious...

i certainly hope i will dont need a re-do...it is my first operation and i am so scared....

good luck

i think it all depends on the person and how they accept implants. my first set were 4 1/2 yrs old and in perfect shape when i exchanged them for bigger. some peoples last 20 yrs and some for 1 yr. its a gamble for sure. good luck

I actually e-mailed my PS this very question about a month ago...following is my question and her answer.

Q: Why does there tend to be such a high re-operation rate? I've read stats anywhere from 10-20% within the first four years. Is this primarily due to aesthetics (bigger/smaller, change from saline to silicone) or is it truly due to complications?

A: Both, breast augmentations are not all done by board certified plastic surgeons, unfortunately. I quote 15% at 10 years, not at 4 years.

Her answer made me feel a LOT better!!

I think the norm for a re-do is between 6 months to a year. And that's for those who want to go larger/smaller or who had some complications like CC, bottoming out double bubble. But you have to understand that most people don't have any problems. It just seems that way because those that do come on the internet and this forum for support.

As for re-dos down the road, you MAY want to have one if you begin to sag, but that would be several years from now. And again, that's not the norm.

Implants nowadays can last a very long time. I've seen women have theirs for 20+ years before they need a redo. It's odds I was willing to live with.
