Question Is it okay to take a Xanax before surgery?

I had my mother give me 2 pills of her Xanax because I KNOW I will be having major anxiety the night before and day of surgery. That won't affect going under right?

I was told I could, but just be sure to tell the anesthesiologist. Call our PS office to be sure, but I asked like three times and was assured that it was fine.

Yes, here also! I took it the night before and morning of surg...I was CRAZY nervous. But as ceegee said...make sure to tell the anestheologist. They know people frequently take these meds before surg! Best wishes with your surg and a healthy speedy recovery!

Do not take it before surgery. I took it once I got home because I was having a panic attack. As soon as I got home my ps called and my husband told him that I was panicking. He called the pharmacy and I got xanax. I took one and felt great.

My doctor actually prescribed Valium to take the night before and the morning of, with a Xanax scrip for after surgery.

Chances are, you can get your PS to prescribe you something.

Why not before? My PS's nurse said it was fine.

Hi. I'm taking a Xanax in the morning of surgery also but just make sure you take it with a tiny sip of water and to tell your aneastesiologist. I would ask permission before hand good luck!!

I was told not to take anything, they will give you something at surgery center before to help calm your nerves. You should call your office and tell them your having anxiety and see what they recommend

I have a big fear of needles, so my PS gave me a prescription for Xanax to take in the morning. It should not be a problem for you to take it, but just clear it with them beforehand. It is also very important to only take it with a TINY sip of water and tell the anesthesiologist. They asked me about 5 times if I was 100% sure I only had a small sip.

you have to ask permission and make sure that they know about. it is a sedative so it will decrease your heart rate and if your anesthesiologist doesn't know this and gives you a normal dose that would be too high with what you've already taken this could have very scary consequences. don't take ANYTHING before surgery without your doctor knowing about it

I was also given a script for valium to take before and after surgery. I plan on taking a zanax the night before and the valium after. If I can be in labor for 3 days and end up in a C section...I can handle a new set of boobs. LOL Im the biggest needle phobe! We all are gonna be ok.
