Smile could surgery be canceled for having a common cold?

Hi Girls,
Just wondering if surgery could be canceled for just a common cold. I have little ones at home and it seems with preschool they just constantly have a cold. I am taking vitamin C and also Airborne (vitamin juice) and carry hand sanitizer around with me. I know this probably sounds crazy but I don't want my surgery canceled! My family keeps passing the colds back and forth and now I have one again.
Thanks again

I got a cold right before my BA and was nervous about it too so i did what you are doing. make sure you get plenty of rest and drink lots of OJ! I also found that drinking hot herbal tea seemed to help some too! Good luck! I think also if its just a head cold they wouldnt cancel it but if its in your chest with coughing etc they would

Hi Karisa! i asked the nurse at the office this question & she said my ps would not do surgery if the patient is sick. i have read that many ps's will still do surg though if its just a cold. my ps also did not allow me to take vit c pills till after the surgery. i would call the office & ask about the cold & taking vit c pills pre op. when's your surgery? xoxo

I work in a surgeons office and I get this call almost everyday. Here are our guidelines...if you have a fever, chills, or extremely phlemy and thick nasel drainage then we reschedule. If you have a clear cough, clear nasel drainage and no fever you are safe. Hope that helps...but I would definatly call the PS office...they are there to answer your questions...believe me that is all I do all day long!

it's OK

I was getting the flu the day of my BA and I told the anaesthetist and he just asked did I have a fever (which I didn't). My heart rate was high too but they still did it. I think unless you are puking or something, or if you have a fever you should be fine...

Get some Lysol! You should ask your PS about the vitamin C and the Airborne if you haven't already. Some surgeons don't like for you to take anything before surgery.

I had a cold before/during my BA. I called my surgeons office and they said everything would be fine as long as I didn't have a fever and I wasn't congested in my chest. My surgery went on as planned and everything was fine.

Patti - I guess it depends on how bad the cold is, but only your PS can really answer this so best to ask him/her. I would also check about the supplements (vit C) you're taking as I was told not to take ANY supplements for at least 2 weeks before (and after) surgery. I take Mefenamic Acid for heavy periods and am due any time now and am dreading it because I can't take it this month or next. I'll just sit, very still, at home all day....yeah right!!

Sorry, back to the 'cold' question, my PS did tell me this 'horror' story, so don't read on if you don't want to be worried. On her first week on the ITU there was a 20 year old girl who came in for a breast reduction. Her surgeon had caught a bug from his son, but at the time the PS hardly had a sniffle so didn't think anymore of it. Anyway, the girl got an infection off the surgeon and her body did not produce any sort of immune response, and she died My PS did also say that this is EXTREMELY RARE. When I asked her what are the chances of dying on the operating table (as only I could ask a paranoid question like that) she said it happens about twice a year in the whole of the UK, so not likely at all.

Sorry, that turned into rather a depressing post...

Red face Thanks Girls!

Thanks for all the answers. I feel better now, although I will still ask my PS. My twins just started preschool and they are bringing everything home. We just seem to be passing it back & forth. Thank God I don't get fevers, just sore throat & sniffles with alittle cough here & there. I still have some time before surgery on Dec. 8th. But I will probably get rid of this cold & pick up another one.

These are the supplements I was told to take pre&post surgery 1wk before surgery.......Vitamin A. 25,000 IU per day. A vitamin w/beneficial effects on wound healing, and on the immune system

Bromelain 1,000 mg. per day. Helps prevent bruising and relieves the swelling associated with surgery.

Vitamin C 2,000 mg per day. Essential part of normal wound healing w/ the body's need increased by recent surgery or other stress.

Zinc (chelated). 30mg to 50mg per day. Aids wound healing and the immune system.

Also arnica herb used for bruising & Swelling post surgery
3 to 5 pellets under tongue beginning the night before surgery & then 3 to 5 every four hrs. for first 2days.

after incisions are healed vitamin E cream or ointment to closed incisions 2x daily for 2 to 3months.

No vitamin E by mouth 2wks prior because it thins the blood >a list of all meds not to take 2wks before.

P.S. I don't advise anyone taking these, until they check with their P.S.
Thanks Girls

Hi there Patti. I had to have my surgery post-poned, but I was REALLY sick! My ps thought it would be best to wait instead of having the possibility of complications. If you are about a month out, you should be fine, but ask your ps about taking Airborne and Vitamin C. My ps wouldn't let me take either one 2 weeks prior to my surgery. Remember vitamins and supplements (including herbal) should be avoided.
I know it's hard, when your kids are sick...trust me I know! Just wash your hands constantly and keep your hands away from your eyes and mouth!
