What's the difference between Silicone and Gummy Bear Implants? and which are better?

What's the difference between regular silicone implants and gummy bear implants? Also, which is the better choice or the two?

I'm wondering because my surgeon offers both at the same price....

Hi Musicgirl,
From what I understand (at least 7-8 months ago) from my ps is gummy bear implants are not FDA approved for use. But, I guess since you are being offered them they must be approved.

But according my ps, Gummy Bear implants are shaped (teardrop), more firmer, and more "form stable", meaning they will retain their shape longer. This is somewhat confusing because the normal silicone implants are quite "form stable" themselves. He also said not every woman will be well served by shaped implants once they are approved.

So basically from what I gathered, gummy bear implants will be another option for us girls but will not be the choice for everyone. Kind of a new "innovation" for implants.

At my ba time he told me it's probably not worth waiting for these implants to become available and delaying the rewards of a ba sooner than later, so I went with the normal silicone implant because I wanted them now (then). But, it sounds like they will work for you. Hope this helps…good Luck!

Good question, I don't really get it either. So basically are they just anatomicals??

Regular silicone is by far the better choice. The incision for the gummies is even larger since they are firmer and cannot be squeezed in like the others via funnel or by hand. They retain their shape so the incision is almost as long as the diameter of the implant. The also feel much less natural.

Mine are round. And my incisions aren't that big. I chose them because of the reduced chance of leaking/rupture. They are like a gummy bear inside, rather than like jello. I don't think one is necessarily better than the other- just personal preference.

GR8 question! This would be a wonderful consult convo, seems there is alot of confusion and some misinformation about gummi implants.. Since your PS offers both products, they would have the latest info & aide you in the right choice selection depend on what ur desires & expected outcome would be..

The answer to your question would be a matter of opinion

Good luck & Keep us posted on your decison!

You are right about them not being like jello, all modern silicone is cohesive gel, the "gummi" implant has a thicker/solid like density

There is a lot of confusion between cohesive gel and gummy bear implants. Right now the FDA has approved cohesive gel implants by Mentor and Allergan. In clinical trial there are gummy bear implants in anatomical shape. In other countries the gummy bear implants are available in round and anatomical. Recently a third brand of implant, Sientra, was approved by the FDA. Sientra makes a gummy bear implant in both round and anatomical. They are new on the US market, but more surgions have access to stock or order them.

All silicone are cohesive now. It is the grade of cohesion that is different. The implants are given a cohesion rating of 1-4, 4 being the firmest available. The gummies are the highest cohesion. Brands differ on the cohesion of their rounds, some offer multiple levels of cohesion in the same cc size. Your best option is to consu,t with your surgeon. Ask about the levels of firmness and cohesion, ask about incision limitations. Check what brand they are so you can research the brand. Once you know the brand information there may be someone here on JBI that can give you a personal opinion. Also once you know the brand information you can seek the opinion of one (or a few) of the surgeons in the Ask a Plastic Surgeon forum.

breast cancer patients

At first they were only available to breast cancer patients ... seeing as how they were having a masectomy they had the scars anyway so having a big scar they would already be used to seeing that scar ... I kinda want the gummies ...

Oh wow, I didn't know that there was actually a scale on how cohesive a silicone breast implant can be. Interesting, I'll definitely keep that in mind and bring that up with my surgeon. I'de probably want something like a 1 or 2 on the scale, unless 1's are just too floppy and loose.

I didn't know I have these, but I think I do! Sientra high strength silicone gel in HP. Dr said it was his new favorite HP implant, but didn't know it was a gummi kind? Interesting...

Oh and my scars aren't bad at all, I read a comment about how big they can be with gummi? They seem pretty good actually, office said I scar well.
