Anesthesia

Hi guys,

I've never had a surgery before, and I have never been under any kind of anesthesia.
I've heard all kinds of stories about anesthesia! I heard it can make you sick and throw up, that when you come off it, you could be violent or start babbling and saying silly or mean things,etc....

What was your guys' experience with it?

Sorry, didn't mean to "like" that.

I have been under anesthesia for two different procedures (cataract surgery and septo/rhino) and I've personally had no bad experiences. I think it depends on how sensitive your stomach is to begin with.

I had to go under twice during my surgery. the first time I woke up from it I vomited twice but the second time I was just sleepy. And it didnt make me silly or laugh i felt the same as i always do just super tired.

I generally have a very strong stomach to begin with. If i start feeling nauseous I am usually able to fight it off, or take Gravol.
The thing is, I have a fear of throwing up (silly, but true) and I have never actually thrown up before, so you can see how this would be a fear of mine.. I would be very emabrrassed!!
I wonder if I can ask the anesthesiologist to give me some anti nausea medicine just in case?

I have taken pain meds (with codiene, morphone pills, etc) and they haven'y made me throw up either.

I've been under 3 times now. The first 2 were emergency surgeries and I got sick bad after both. My last one was Monday and I pre-warned the staff about my getting sick. No vomiting this time around, just really sleepy.

like you, ive never been under at all. Thats why i chose to have the twilight/IV sedation. it's easier on your body, you wake up from it easier/faster, less chance of you getting sick from it. My PS offers both twilight/iv sedation and general anesthesia. general only at the medial center, twilight/iv sedation in his in suite surgical office.

Anesthesia has come a long way. I have had general 4 times now. I make sure to tell the anesthesiologist I get sick and he loads me up with Anti-emetics. With my surgery 6 days ago I had a transdermal patch I wore for 2 days and another one they had on me during surgery. I had absolutely NO nauseau or vomiting.
Good luck.

That's a great option!!!!! I almost did that but was worried that I had some major CC in my non-ruptured implant turns out it wasn't bad.

My stomach is generally pretty strong. I don't get sick off of pain meds like morphine pills or t3's (codiene etc) But I have a fear of throwing up..... Ever since I was little, which is probably why I have never thrown up before because i am so scared!
Maybe I will ask for gravol/anti-nasuea meds just in case. I would be so so so embarrassed!

I've been under twice. Once 12 years ago and the last this past Thursday (BA and TT). Both times I woke up groggy, very sleepy and quiet. No throwing up. No nausea. No crazy babbling. Lol

I had no nausea, no vomiting, but i did babble. Apparently, I called my dad, step mom, friends, co workers...pretty much my entire phone book and I dont remember any of it. Fortunatly I didnt say anything out of line lol. I was under general I did however stress to the staff my desire to not puke and whatever they did worked. Im a little hazy on everything that happened for like 12 hrs after my anesthesia as I just slept, ate, and slept some more. DF tells me I was pretty funny and I was walking drunk..

My first anaesthetic was with my BA and it's was very smooth sailing, woke up curled up on my side which I guess is pretty unusual cos they kept asking me if I was comfortable. After that I pretty much slept, watched tv then slept some more the whole day. The only time I nearly threw up was the first time I sat up and they hadn't warned me not to use my arms, the pain was immense. I'm bit of a trooper when it comes to pain, never usually bothers me much so it was quite a shock to feel something so intense it makes you wanna puke. Safe to say I never made that mistake again!

Oh good to know! Thank you! I've heard that before... And seen before, that if you are in so much pain it can actually make you throw up because the pain is just too much.
I will be careful!
