help me stop being scared of general anesthesia

it's THE ONLY thing I'm scared of, i'm not scared of recovery, i'm not scared of the pain, i'm not scared of anything I'm just really scared I'm going to pass away wh ile under or something.

So I've been considering Twilight, but I'm not sure what the anesthesiologist will have to say about that, I have to wait til day of surgery to discuss w/ him about it..

I know that driving your car to the surgery is a higher chance of dying, and I also know that taking ecstacy is even more riskier.......

I"m just so scared something bad will happen to me, but I love being under GA.

ugh

Okay, so are you saying that you take ecstacy, cause, yeah, that is hell dangerous?? I wouldn't worry about passing away while you're under. They have your heart monitored the whole time and if you were to die, what better place to be than on an operating table where they can whip out their paddles and zap your butt back to life! Thats how I see it anyway. You're in good hands, don't worry about a thing.

sorry, i dont really know how to make you feel better lol! the thought of general anesthia scared the shit outta me too! but i got twilight...YOU REALLY SHOULD CONSIDER IT MORE!!! everyone gets freaked out by it because you could stay awake or wake up during surgery...although you dont feel nething!!! i had twilight and i woke up about 4-5 times during surgery then passed back out after a couple seconds.

its A LOT safer, and MUCH QUICKER recovery...i recommend it.

haha no i wasn't saying I do ecstacy, I mean I have tried it, and that there on it's own is VERY risky. so why am I scared of GA? I definitely don't do it now and would never do it again, it's a dumb young person thing to do

but you are aboslutely right, they can zap me back!

And you were sedated so when you woke up you didn't freak out right?

One of the reasons I don't want to do twilight is just because

1. I'm scared I'll wake up AND FREAK OUT

2. I'm scared I'll keep waking up (like you did) and that will make the surgery seem sooo long.

Why is it a quicker recovery and why is it less risky?

I will definitely talk to him about it, that's the ONLY thing i'm really freaking about

I was a little scared of GA, but it was so simple. I personally have some minimal heart disorders (that kind of sounds like an oxymoron) and they took very good care of me. It is their jobs to monitor you and take care of you - don't stress!

I would do GA over twilight ANY day... but I am sure the people who had twilight would take that over GA. Sorry that I am not much help! I am the type of girl who doesnt lie medical stuff, thinks of all the things that could go wrong, etc. and in the end, it was super easy - I wouldn't fret!

I don't know how to convince you but I can say that GA is very safe. I've said several times on here that I actually kind of like it. Timeless, dreamless sleep. You're there one minute, and it's done the next. Twilight tends to still have that concept of time and I don't like the idea of being even slightly awake.

I've been put under a general 6 times, each time has been a breeze.

I'm telling you, when this is done you are going to feel SO silly for worrying so much.

Honestly I am the most anxious person, a year ago I could not even eat out at a restaurant without getting panicky, I still take drugs to get on planes, I requested happy meds before my op bcos I was scared of GA (which was yesterday) but they left it too late to give me anything.. and I was not nervous at all! Pleasantly surprised! Just think how often these people do this, all in a days work for them.

Darlin...please don't be scared. Trust me, you will be totally fine. I was scared as hell too though!! All kinds of things flashed through my head right before going under: dying, pooping in my pants, throwing up afterwards. And I can assure you, NONE of that happened! Seriously, you just pass out and then wake up and you're done. I felt like I had just woken up out of a deep sleep and was already chit chatting with the nurse when I came too. They used anti-nasuea meds in the iv, and I was also injected with local so I wouldn't be in pain when I woke up. But if you still feel any pain when you wake up, the nurse will give you something asap. Plus, they put something in my iv before bringing me in the OR that REALLY relaxed me....so at that point, there was no more freaking out.

You are dealing with professionals and they will take good care of you. Wouldn't you just rather pass out and wake up and be done, then risk possibly waking up while the surgery is happening? I know that doesn't always happen with twilight, but I've heard from a few girls that went through that. So try not to worry - going under is a piece of cake. Good luck and let us know how everything goes!

I have been a nurse in the operating room for 5 years now. Trust me general anesthesia is very safe. People do not die from anesthesia if they die in the operating room( and trust me, it is very minimal) it is from there injury/trauma. And as someone else said we will zap your butt back to life cuz its too much paperwork to let you die. haha So seriously try not to worry the doctors and nurses will take very good care of you

I agree with Bluetree. I was given all the same stuff during my surgery and I was fine. You can check out my BA story, I wrote some stuff about the GA and how it affected me, I was nervous before but afterwards I thought it was great! I'm sure you will be fine either way. Good luck and keep us posted!

Adding to all the wisdom the ladies have posted... the operating team is not in business to kill us. Rest assured you are in good hands. The docs have a vested interest in keeping us alive and well! I hope it goes well!!!
