Question Internal permanent stitches?

With my 2nd redo my PS chose to use internal permanent stitches because he said that he found that the scars heal much better with them. With my initial augmentation I had bad hypertrophic scarring on my crease incisions and this noticed this was happening right from the start. A year later they were worse. This time the scars (although much longer because I went with large size cohesive gels) are so much more even and flat and I'm only into my 2nd month of healing. Did anyone else have these type of stitches? I'm wondering why my PS didn't use them the first time out!

Now there is one odd thing however. On each side the the threads themselves can be seen and felt ever so slightly at the end of each scar! I'm back in Canada now so I wrote to my PS and asked him why they would be poking through the outside of my skin if they are INTERNAL stitches and what the heck I'm supposed to do now?! This was his response (English is not his first language):

Quote:
If you seesome blak or blue stitches those are internal ones and are permanent. What you need to do is just to pull them out with some fine instrument. in case you do not have any you can put some small forceps in boiling water ten minutes and previously cleaning your skin with alcohol pull and cut them.
Now I don't know about you but I feel totally uncomfortable messing with these myself. I'm going to see a PS here for tattoo removal and fillers for lines on my face so I'll ask him to do this for me. Has anyone else ever heard of this happening? In addition, he never answered my question as to why the stitches would have ended up left on the outside. I think I'll pose this question to the other surgeons in this forum as well. Any feedback would be appreciated.

This doesn't make sense to me. If they are permanent stitches, why are you supposed to pull them out? To me, permanent sounds like something that should be in there for good. I think checking with another PS where you live is a very good idea. Could it be, with the language difference, that your original PS didn't explain things correctly to you?

Spitting stitches isn't unusual at all. But those are dissolvable stitches that aren't meant to be permanent, I think.

Good luck with this. I'll be curious to hear what you find out.

I have internal stitches too. I just got all my little external ones out, but I have found a few that she missed (unless they are internal ones poking out). I'm also wondering what to do about them! They are irritating and I was pulling on one with tweezers last night until my husband walked in a told me to leave them alone. Will they just come out on their own? Sorry if I hijacked this thread!!

No worries! I think this is a valid concern and I did post over in the PS threads about this.
