MRI every 2 years?

Ok, so I'm really torn.
I decided to get silicone for my ba since it is now available to everyone. But there is catch. My ps called me and said to read what mentor had to say about them in their web site.
What I read was that ruptures are usually silent and the only way to know if you have one is through an MRI. They recomend getting it at 3 years after surgery and then every 2 years after that. The thing is that it is possible that insurances won't cover it because it was an elective surgery. MRI's cost a couple thousand each time, and mentor said that I will probably spend more money on MRI's through the life of my implants then the cost of the actual surgery. I paid $7800!!!!
What should I do? is it really worth the risk? or should I go with saline?
I don't think I will be able to spend a couple grand every two years on MRI's, it's crazy! Please help!

wow! i've never heard of that! My PS never mentioned anything about that and his assistant has silicone implants. I even saw on dr.90210 Dr.Li removed a silicone implant that was ruptured and replaced it w a new one. and i know that there's another way of knowing if it's ruptured but not w an MRI,..hopefully what they told u it's not right because mri's are extremely expensive!!

i am having my BA monday and i will still go w silicone, because what i've heard silicone doesn't rupture that easily.

Thanks for sharing though!

Hey Bea, I saw that episode too, it was quite icky.
It is not what they tod me , it's on the mentor web site.
Please visit this link that I attached, it is the mentor site and it tells you all about the MRI's and the statistics about the implants.
It is quite long but you can skip through to the important stuff. Read and tell me what you think.
I don't want you to go through your sugery without knowing all of the risks and extra money involved, it looks like your ps might not know about it either because I'm sure he would have told you.

OMG Sandie!

That's not good....

So,the person won't feel the rupture? The implant won't look smaller after rupture? Because it's kinda crazy getting checked every two years for the rest of ur life!!

I don't know what to do! It's too expensive...

I know Bea, I don't know what to do either.
I really wanted silicone soooo bad. My ps said that the MRI is optional, but do you really want to risk it?
I guess we can wait and see if there are any more posts with some advise, and of course I will talk to my ps the morning of surgery and see what he recomends.

An MRI or ultrasound is the only way that you will know for sure if a silicone implant has ruptured. I haven't ever heard a time line quote on when you should have MRI's to check for ruptures. Personally, *I* wouldn't have an MRI that often. I think if you are that scared the silicone implants are going to rupture, you shouldn't get them.

I'm not sure why you would opt for an MRI over a traditional mammogram. Most insurance companies will pay for a mammogram. If they see something on the films they will order more films and/or MRI to make sure there isn't a rupture or a cancerous mass.

If you are in the US, your implants should be from Mentor or Inamed/Allergan Medical.
Mentor Corp. Allergan Medical. These are the two major implant manufacturers.

I was thinking about going with the silicone implants and also read about the MRI's. Like you I don't want to spend the money on the MRI's. I'm not so sure a mammogram or ultra-sound would show a rupture.

I will be asking my PS those questions also since he told me to let him know which ones I decide on.

The other concern I had was the size. With saline he can fill them as he goes to get the size. The silicones are pre-filled so once he decides, based on pictures I gave him, that's it.

Please let us know what your PS says about the MRI's etc.

Like you, I was also concerned about the size. Cause you're right, with saline he can fill it more if need be.
And of course I will come back after surgery and let you girls know what he says about the MRI's and also what I decide on, cause I'm not quite sure just yet.

Sandi

I just saw my primary care Dr. last week, and my last mammogram was May 05. He's searching for a facility to do a digital mammogram for me. I asked about my "insurance" coverage issues. He said that I cannot be denied coverage if my plan is part of a "group coverage", meaning I have insurance through the hospital where I work. Also, he did say my coverage covers digital mammograms. I'm not sure about MRI, haven't researched that yet.....

There's something about companies can't "deny/or show prejudice" against an individual in a group plan. Lets hope I never have to get coverage on my own.

Ewalina, I hope you're right.
I also work for a hospital and it would be great if they covered my MRI's cause I really want to get silicone.
Are you happy with your silicone's? and if you were to do it again woud you get saline or still stick with silicone?
I have a major decision to make by tuesday morning, and I'm really torn.
