Have any of you had to cancel your breast augmentation because your job wouldn't let you have a medical leave?

No. Are you doing yours as medical leave? If so they can't really say no. I'm on leave now as holidays which I cleared months ago

WHAT!? That is not fair I mean true you don't actually need it but it is medical and why won't they let you take normal leave? You are entitled to 4 weeks holiday per year (in Australia) I just had a funny thought if they won't give you the time off you could call in sick and say you have vomiting & or diahorrea so you can't leave the bathroom to come to work!

At my work you can't even take off if you have to flu! I will need 6wks off because I lift 20lbs or more for 10hr shifts.

Is Alabama a "right to work" state? If so, I think you may be screwed. This policy really stinks though because so much surgery is "elective". My husband had to have surgery years ago for an obstructed colon - it was technically "elective" but not really. So how the heck would you even go about getting an excuse then??? You may want to call your state's employment office and ask them if there are any laws or any loopholes under which you can apply, but it sounds like you're working in a tough environment there... Sorry I can't be of more help... Is there any "light duty" work that you could do there during your 6 week recovery period? Just a thought... |

That sounds so ridiculous - even if it is elective surgery, you still have to RECOVER! If there is any way your surgeon could fill out some paperwork for you or maybe have your regular doctor make something up, I would try that. I agree with oliveskin - if none of that works, ask your manager if they could put you on light duty while you're in recovery, that way you don't have to take the time off. If they're at all reasonable, they should try and work with you on this. I sure hope it works out for you - it's not worth losing your job over. |

Seriously, that really sucks. I don't have too much trouble getting time off, it's taking time off that is hard. No one else does my job for me so everyday I'm gone is a day of work waiting for me when I return. This has got to be driving you nuts. Is it even reasonable to consider a different job?? | |

i'm not *too* sure about this, but i think as long as you can give your employer a note from your PS, they *have* to oblige legally. i was ready to tell my PS to give me a week off, and she would've done it (but it turns out i didn't need to at all ).hth! |

I would be finding a new job if I was you it sounds like you're working for a sweatshop. Do they time your toilet breaks too? As for no light duties unless you get injured on the job - what cr*p! So if you hurt yourself outside of work then what? They sound totally unreasonable

Oh geeze - this is really a tough one because you have a heavy lifting job. I can't think of a clever way out of this one. For most of us, we just take a few days because we don't have the same kind of lifting obligations you do ... I stacked my days off against the Christmas holidays for a full week. But that's not like six weeks. I wouldn't have a job when I came back if I was gone for six weeks! If you do think about changing jobs seriously, the downtime in between jobs would be a very good time to get it done. That's so difficult to plan though. I'm sorry, hun :-(

Not to take over your thread or anything, but it's kind of related. Technically, I receive two weeks vacation a year. Now, other than an extra day here or there related to holidays that we all get anyway, I've never really taken it. Any days I've taken offhave always been for someone else, i.e. baby sitting my niece. The few days I did take for myself, I either ended up coming in for a bit anyway or gotten calls about this and that. I've never taken a week or two weeks straight. Those that have receive two weeks vacation a year, do you break it up or take it straight? I would give anything to take my two weeks just for my breast augmentation. After working five years with nary a real vacation I feel deserve it, but I don't see it happening.
