Constipation
Title says it all! Wondering if any of you asked your PS specifically what to take? I have always had issues with this, and used laxatives in the past. However afraid to take with all my body has been through that this may be too harsh. I am three days out with BA, but 5 days since using the..umh bathroom so to speak. Did any of you ask your PS what to take? Thanks for the advice

Totally had the same problem as you ... I even started stool softeners on the day of my BA, and took them three times a day ... no help, because my body has had problems with constipation in the past. First off, get off the rx painkillers if you haven't already ... they're what's causing it. And yes, get a laxative. I took two Dulcolax laxatives (as per my PS's instructions) ... my first movement was ROUGH (sorry if that's TMI), and then I was constantly going for the next several hours. Took me a couple of days before those sudden urges went away and I was back on track, but it had to be done. There was no other way!

As Chic said, the rx's are most likely what is causing this in the first place, so if you can, slowly start getting off of them. Drinking lots of water helps as well. I don't know that laxatives are a good idea, ask your PS first.

My ps recommended a stool softener. I don't like to take medicine unless totally necessary so I drank a ton of water and fresh juices and ate lots of prunes. Worked like a charm!

Get Mineral Oil
My doc said to start taking 1 tablespoon a day at night right before I go to bed. I started taking it the day after surgery. The next day I went number 2 and was regular from then on. Never constipated and even when I went I never had to strain and it was just normal. I highly recommend it. Just make sure you take it right before going to bed. It totally did the trick.
Give it a try and let us know how it goes. I bet it works! Oh and I got it at Walgreens. It's a clear solution that doesn't have any flavor to it either. Thank God! Josie |

May I recommend phsylium fibre. It's all natural fibre, you can get it at a health food store or a bulk food store. You can take a heaping teaspoon morning and night............problem solved. If constipation is an ongoing problem, take 1 heaping teaspoon daily forever. It doesn't dissolve, it floats in liquid so I put it in my morning shake or take dry and wash it down with some OJ or water (OJ is better.
Good luck! |

It is usually the opioids given during surgery for pain relief that cause the constipation. I didnt really bother with getting anything for the constipation. The last thing i felt like doing was going to the bathroom - i was having enough trouble pulling my pants up, ripping toilet paper to urinate to be thinking about reaching around that far to wipe and as much as my bf loves me i doubt he would have been volunteering! By the time i was ready to 'poop' it was a few days out and i had recovered enough to manage myself!

I asked my PS about it (being constipated post-surgery) and he said it shouldn't be a big deal so he didn't prescribe me anything or give me any recommendations. But I made a point to drink a LOT of water and to eat a ton of fruit and vegetables and high-fiber bread.... I think I went the next day, so it wasn't too bad. (TMI

You might also want to consider taking Miralax if you have regular issues with constipation. I took it before and after surgery and it worked well. Didn't have any issues with going afterwards. Good luck!

Aloe Vera Juice....does wonders. I started drinking about 2oz of this mixed with some juice 2 weeks or so before my ba. I did not have any problems with constipation. I continue to drink it bc it is so good for you and it keeps me regular. I buy it at a health food/organic grocery store. The taste by itself is not too bad.

I used fiber clear ... you just ad a spoonfull to water morning & night & it worked wonders, the joy of fiber clear is that it has no taste at all even in water but you can ad it to any juice or drink you want.

Ugh!!! I'm miserable!! Is it okay if I take a stool softener or should I ask my PS first? I've eaten so much and nothing has come out and I can just feel it all sitting there. My boobs look and feel great and I stopped taking the narcotics yesterday, but my stomach just feels awful.

I used ducolax by both methods of ahmm... administration. I have problems in this area as well 3 days before and was 4 days after. But things are right as rain now.
