Concern about the morning of surgery

I plan to discuss this with my PS on Thursday, my pre-op appointment, but was wondering if others experience the same thing. I know you cannot eat/drink anything past midnight before the BA. I'm the kind of person that gets severe headaches, and sometimes pass out, if I don't eat/drink in the morning. ESPECIALLY my morning coffee-not only am I downright irritable & bitchy, the lack of caffiene tends to bring a headache to a full blown migraine. I don't report to my PS's office until 9:45 am, with surgery scheduled at 11:00 am. I'll try to sleep as long as possible, but on an empty tummy, I know I will wake up hungry. I do plan to eat something filling around 11 pm the night before. It will be a very long and agonizing morning for me, and I fear fainting and migraines will cause a delay in the surgery.

Actually I'm the same, I get cranky when I don't eat and feel sick, but my surgery was at 9:50 a.m. and with all the nerves and excitment, the hungry pains go away for a bit, but when surgery was over...I ate the whole basket of crackers and drank tons of water.....

Hang in there. Suggestion: Eat alot the night before, so that your not as hungry when you wake up. And you may drink small amount of liquids up to 4 hours of surgery, but talk to your anesthioglist (sp?). But I played it safe and didn't drink one thing. I didn't want to mess with anesthesia.

good luck and don't worry. Just follow instructions.

This is probably going to sound kind of stupid and ignorant but have you thought about maybe taking a walk or planning something nice to do in the morning to take your mind off of it...? Maybe work in the garden or come on the JBI board and lurk

My guess is that you will be so excited/anxious/nervous that you will hardly think about eating!

I'm in the same boat as you only my surgery isn't until 12:30!!! I can't believe they can get away w/ that..lol! I also get VERY shaky if I don't eat anything so we'll see..they might just think I'm shaking because I'm nervous!

Another thing I wonder about is if you are nearly dehydrated by the time you go in for surgery, won't that make it hard to find a good vein for the IV?

Just a thought...hmmmmm...

Very good point! And I do remember this happened to me when I had a D & C follonig a miscarriage. By the time they ran all the labs to check the Hcg levels, I was to the point of barely able to walk, stand, and ready to pass out. They had to get me in the wheel chair and the nurses coudl not get an IV in me at all. I'm going to ask my PS about the dehydration factor and finding a vein.

The reason they don't want you to eat or drink is in case you regurgitate/reflux under anesthesia. If you do then you're at risk to aspirate (inhale) your reflux and get pneumonia. I know it sucks but there is a very good reason for it. You might want to ask if you can suck on some hard candy in the morning. You will get a bit of sugar that way but you won't have anything in your stomach. As for finding a vein. You won't dehydrate that quickly. Any good anesthesiologist will find a vein without any trouble! It's only one day so try to hang in there. It will pass quickly!

I am like you..need my coffee ASAP in the morning. I am always starving when I wake up too. But let me tell you, you will be fine! I had an afternoon surgery. I had to report to the PS at 11:30. I was so worried I would be thirsty and starving..but I made it! I ate more than normal the day before and a big Mexican dinner at 8PM. I also stayed up late so I would sleep in the morning of surgery. I didn't suffer from hunger too much that day. Although I was calm, I had too much on my mind to think about feeling starved. Good Luck!

I am so glad my surgery is at 7 am. I can eat a huge meal, and still be staving the next morning, so it would not work for me to have afternoon surgery at all. You should be fine as far as the anesthesiologist finding your vein and all. They can start an IV when NOBODY else can, trust me. Good luck!!

I appreciate everyone's tips and sugesstions for the morning of surgery! I am sure I will be OK. Hungry and headachy, but I'll be fine. It is only for one morning, and I just need to mentally prepare myself for it.

Yes, hopefully the excitement will ward off any ill feelings. I am pre-BA, but I was induced with my daughter. Same thing - no eating or drinking past midnight! (And this is what they tell a 9 month pregnant woman!!) I had to report at the hospital early, and there was so much excitement that I was fine...and my daughter wasn't born until 6:30 PM...so it was a long day without eating. I did tell my family to go into the hall to discuss their meal plans throughout the day! (On a side note, after I did eat, I threw it up because I ate too much too fast - don't make the mistake!)

Good luck!

I'm a total coffee lover. If I don't get my morning cup... Watch out!!

But knowing that others have gone through it wonderfully gives me hope.

My suggestion is to see if you can get an earlier surgery time so you will not have to wait so long. It was brought up at my pre op visit. The nurse asked me about how I did without eating. I responded that I do get shaky and lightheaded. I was scheduled for a 6:30 am time and then due to the driving to get there was moved to an 8:00time which is not so bad considering. Check to see if there is a better time or possibly switch the date of surgery so you can get an earlier time.

Hey girl! You'll be fine. You'll be so excited and nervous that it will all go by quickly. Like others have said, there is a very good reason for not drinking beforehand. My surgery was scheduled for 8:00am, so I was lucky in that I had to be there early. If I had had to go much longer, it would have been hard. Just eat a lot the night before and try to relax and daydream about your beautiful boobies and you won't even need that cup of coffee

You should be ok, but may I recommend something? It may not be a bad idea to eat something that will make you feel full for a long time. Anything with fiber, as well as peanut butter and any other complex carbs should do the trick. The morning of you may want to ask if you can just drink some sugar water before you head out.
I know that I faint and what not as well when I don't eat, except I don't drink coffee. But I know where you are coming from and this always helps me a lot.
