decision on re-do - every consider removal? any problems w/ silicone?

Hi Ladies! I wanted to thank the women who answered my last thread about mammograms, etc. Your opinions really helped ease my mind! I too am getting nervous about my re-do coming up in November. This will be my second redo - first implants (10 years ago) axillary - 275 (i think) unders- sat way too high and popped up when I flexed muscles, then I got tectured saline and one ruptured - so another surgery! - I hate the rippling and hardness with these implants. Now I'm planning on 300 or more silicone and I found a new surgeon, Dr. DeWire, who seems WONDERFUL! I feel so much more comfortable with him. He recommended the silicone for me because of all I've been through so far. I don't want to deal with any more problems. I'm excited but also wondering If I should give up on implants all together and live with small deflated boobies (I know personal decision, but) has anyone else considered this decision? Has anyone regretted getting silicon?
I'm 38, 5'4", 115, married to a loving and supportive husband, no kids. Gretchen

Hi Gretchen,

Dr DeWire is a wonderful PS, I have never ever seen a bad result from him or ran into a patient of his that wasn't satisfied.

Do you have traction rippling with the textured implants? I can only assume thats why Dr. DeWire suggested silicone. They ripple less than saline and textured implants. They are also softer.

I can't really answer your question about regret with silicone. I have saline because I didn't qualify for silicone (first time BA you have to qualify to get silicone in the US). When I need a redo I will get silicone because I do have some ripples with the saline. So my regret is a little backward - I wished I was given the choice to get silicone to begin with. It's a personal decision to keep them or remove them, I wish I could help you. I can say that I'm pleased with my implants - rippling and all. I would not go back - I don't regret my decision.

Good luck!

Dont mean to thread hyjack but I had a question re: rippling.

Is it fairly common to have rippling? I can feel some on the sides of my breast, but cant see them. Does anyone ever NOT have rippling (with saline) either they can feel or see.

I'm sure there are ladies that don't have ripples. I'm just not that lucky. I have thin skin and very little breast tissue to camouflage the implant. If you can feel it and not see it, I wouldn't worry too much. I think it's fairly normal to feel the implant. You are very early post-op, I would give it more time to heal and settle. Who knows, you might not have any rippling later.

Run your fingers around your breast, if it feels smooth, you don't have ripples.

I'm not sure what traction rippling is, but when I raise my arm the ripples are obvious. Also when I bend over. Also, they are much harder than when I first got them 4 years ago - suggesting contracture. These are the reasons, Dr. D suggested silicone. I want the natural look and feel vs. projection etc. thanks ladies!

Will Dr. DeWire have you on Accolate after your redo, since you suspect CC?

I don't have rippling yet, but my PS told me he has no doubt I WILL at least feel (and possibly see) it at some point because of how thin my upper body is. I just don't carry body fat up there (hence the little boobies pre-BA).

The thinner you are and the less breast tissue you have, the more likely it is that you will notice rippling.

ivy, i dont want to hijack the thread but could you answer this..i didnt get a reply when i asked someone else a few weeks ago....in the US, what criteria do u need to'qualify' for silicone? i dont think that happens here, although im sure im right in saying that silicone is more common

I think it depends on the study, but I think most times you either need a lift, a redo from saline implants, some breast deformity or having been through cancer (so they can be used for reconstructive purposes). Basically in the US the easiest way to get silicone is to first get saline and then switch.
