BOARD Certified OR just SAYING they are?
Okay,
This subject came up due to a discussion with my sister in law. It started with kind of a comparison between saline and silicone.. as she developed a leak in her salines and originally my brother in law was not going to be able to be there due to the short notice of an emergency surgery ... so we were going to pick her up etc... Well, I was looking at the website and it says her doctor was "board" certified. I'm sure he is. But I was wondering.. I did this originally when I secured my p/s. I made sure I didn't just go by his office statement that he was, I investigated. Well, that was last year. I went back on again to check her Doctor (no names necessary, I suppose) but there were NO RESULTS for this doctor in the system. And just to be sure I checked my p/s and he (and his credentials and certificates) all come up for viewing. Now I was looking at the following site : https://www.abplsurg.org/ModDefault.aspx Does anyone know if there is any other sites with information that validate a surgeon as not only being board certified, but that they are keeping up with all of the latest techniques and updates in Plastic surgery with an MOC? (maintenence of certificate) ONE more question: SHOULD it turn out that her P/S is NOT board certified, would you think that would be information she should have? Or is it a moot point being she already got the re-do and it would then just be worrysome to her.. I would not want that. |

Really good questions, I dont know how well everyone researches their PS but most of what made me go to my PS is that she was a general surgeon before who worked on my uncle with colon cancer, and I kind of trusted a doctor more for having so much knowledge in the medical field as a surgeon. She is also Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. I guess for your knowledge you could contact them to verify if the Doctor is actually certified, but I cant imagine any PS in America who wouldnt be certified, knowing most client/patients are going to check for this 'title'. We rarely verify but if I were your sister, I probably wouldnt want to know if he wasnt, it would make me worry a lot.
I think a lot of it has to do with their education and what kind of supervision they had to reach the requirements of being a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. I would think most PS in America would have it though? (Or maybe I'm just ignorant?) =D |

I checked to see my ps's certifications and was also pleasantly surprised to know that he was also qualified for general surgery and hand surgery. I don't know why that it made a difference to me but like Tantrum, it kind of made me trust him more for some reason.
I wish I could be of more help regarding your other questions.

In Oklahoma you can go to the Oklahoma Medical Board website and it will tell you if the physician is board certified and in what field(s). It will also tell you if there have been any disciplinary actions taken against the physician. It was VERY important to me that my ps be board certified in plastic surgery!

I would definitely recommend that anyone undergoing plastic surgery double check to make sure your surgeon is board certified (mine is double board certified, canada and the u.s. which makes me really comfortable). I have actually read stories of doctors who didn't specialize in plastics in med school, took up plastics anyways, and botched a lot of surgeries. Some of them have even had their license to practice medicine revoked. It is very important to locate a board certified surgeon as they will have both the knowledge and experience required to make your ba experience as positive and comfortable as possible.

my PS had tons of credentials, but was a board-certified "candidate" for ABPS, and she made a point to explain this to me. There is a waiting period to become a ABPS board-certified plastic surgeon, and she was more qualified with more credentials in reconstructive breast surgery than she was for elective cosmetic surgery, but is in the process of attaining board-certified status.
She is legally allowed to say "board-certified" even though she is still in the candidate group, and not 100% part of the ABPS. I would suggest your SIL to ask her PS about the miscommunication, or just call the office. If the PS was making stuff up on the website/promo materials, I would be HIGHLY concerned. :-/ |
