An interesting article on cosmetic surgery- BA/BL...

Was reading an article on the top 10 cosmetic procedures to avoid... this was number 10 I think...

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/PainMan...585277&page=10

"Combination Mastopexy/Breast Implant
What do you get when you combine two tried-and-true plastic surgery techniques in a single operation?

If the procedures in question are a breast lift, or mastopexy, and a breast augmentation, the chances are decent that you could get more complications than you bargained for.

A mastopexy, or breast lift, with simultaneous breast augmentation [has] one of the highest sources of malpractice suits," (emphasis mine)said Dr. Henry Kawamoto, clinical professor of plastic surgery at UCLA and director of the UCLA Craniofacial Clinic.

The reason for all the problems is clear when the aim of each procedure is considered. While mastopexy is often aimed at breast reduction -- essentially tightening up the tissues of the breast to eliminate a flabby, loose appearance -- the aim of breast augmentation is the exact opposite.

So while surgeons performing both procedures may start by removing the excess skin on the breasts during the mastopexy operation, they may find themselves stretching the remaining skin in order to accommodate the breast implants that they put in later.

Aside from the complications that arise due to the combination of the two procedures, patients also face the normal risks that go with each individual surgery -- risks that include the possibility of infection, implant exposure, asymmetry of the breasts, loss of nipple sensation, the inability to breast-feed, healing problems and other complications."

This was pretty much what my PS had to say about it when we talked, and why he refuses to do a combined surgery.

I often wonder how legit statistics on internet articles really are. I know plenty of women who have had both procedures in one surgery and had no complications at all. I highly doubt it would be allowed for so many surgeons to perform them at the same time on a regular basis if there were so many complications with it.

I went to three PS's for consults - one said he wanted to do the combo - another said he wanted to do lift to see if I was happy with the results then if not he would consider doing the breast augmentation - the third recommended the breast augmentation with/out the lift!

Thanks for sharing.....

I chose doctor #3! and am happy with results

I went to 4- 2 said lifts with breast augmentation but they each did them in reverse orders (one does breast augmentation, then BL; the other did BL, then breast augmentation!); one Dr. said to fill them fairly large, no lift, and the other said fill them small, no lift, then if needed do one later. A lot to choose from! (And here I thought it would be settled after the first 2, maybe 3 consults!) It's funny how they can all give such HUGELY different advice to accomplish the same results (I took the same pics to all of them, and went within a week so my breasts would be the same size for all of them- they get bigger near my period).... I chose dr. #3 who does lift, then breast augmentation afterwards. Hope he was the right choice!

I think this was just saying that you have a higher chance of complication when you are combining the 2- not that it shouldn't be allowed, necessarily, but that they have a higher complication rate. To me it makes sense, in that when you add trauma to tissue, you get swelling, and swelling can damage the nerves in the area. When you add MORE trauma, you may get MORE swelling, and therefore a higher chance of damaging the tissue/nerves in the area. Plus, when you get a breast augmentation or a BL, then let that heal, I would think the surgeon would have a better idea of what he's working with (like if you healed from the first surgery with a little assymetry or something, he can adapt the next surgery to correct that with more precision than doing them together and assuming things will heal a certain way, KWIM?) I'm not saying that it is a horrible idea to do them together, I'm just saying it is something to consider. I think their main point was that combined breast augmentation/BLs have one of the highest rates of lawsuits for something that could have been handled differently with a more satisfying outcome. Not knocking PS's that do them- I mean, look at all the diff. ways surgeons choose to handle the same cases presented to them (talk to 100 doctors, you'll probably get 100 diff. ways to come to a solution!)

I am glad my PS did both at the same time. I didn't like the idea of having two surgeries and being put under twice. If I had to do it all over again I would do the same thing, but that's just me.

I have seen some scarrrrry pictures of complications from lifts + augmentations... especially the anchor type lift (that looks like a "T"). I have seen pics of the implant pushing through skin that didn't heal properly at the point where everything was supposed to meet. Very scary and painful looking. I understand what the article was trying to say, and agree that the 2 procedures are a little counter-intuitive to be performed at the same time.

I was debating getting anchor lift and breast augmentation but was told by ps to do breast augmentation first & in a year or so do lift if needed. The nurse explained Basically what the article states. It was great advice FOR ME, everybodys not the same. I'd admit I was nervous and mad because I thought I deserved a different answer but in the end my breasts are perfect. The implants raised my breasts and my nipples sit higher!!
Ps..if my nipples had been lower pre breast augmentation, I would have chosen to do both.

I had both a full anchor lift and a breast augmentation at the same time. It is way too early to judge the final result but so far everything has healed nicely and I am more than pleased with the shape and size of my breasts. The scars look better than I had hoped, too. It is a more complicated procedure than a regular breast augmentation and I think it is extra important to choose the surgeon well. It is a big difference between just adding an implant and re-shaping a breast.

"Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything. Forfty percent of all people know that." - Homer Simpson

Might have some logical truth to it but since we're talking logic, doing two boob surgeries is rough business as well. As well as being a pain in the arse time-wise, it's usually the anesthetic that poses the biggest risk. so by that rationale perhaps doing it in one go has less risk over all, not to mention less cost and time healing. Dunno, just some thoughts on the matter.
