Nanny66, I will keep you in my prayers as you go through the biopsy. Please make sure you tell someone so you don't have to go through this alone. I've had two biopsy's now for benign lumps, but I can't imagine not telling anyone. It was too stressful. The support is good. Please keep up posted ok? On another note, my mom had her bilateral mastectomy yesterday. I have never seen her so humbled and scared. I have cried on several occasions last night and today. My mom is only 60. They think they caught it as early as one could. It's a stage 2, so that has about a 90% cure rate 5 years out. I pray that she can be strong while she goes through chemo. She is so scared about losing her hair. I would be too. It's got to be so humbling. I'm trying to keep her upbeat, but I know that she needs to cry and be upset and get it out. I just hate seeing her like this. |

My mom came home today! YEA!! I feel so bad for her though. Her poor boobs are gone! She always hated them anyway, so I think she is just glad that she doesn't have them anymore. She doesn't seem too upset about losing her boobs yet. I think she is just still so worried about the cancer. She has been so very brave through this.

Great post Nikki, very informative. I'll be sure to click on The Breast Cancer Site every day, that's awesome. My aunt died of breast cancer so this hits close to home for me. Thanks again |

It was nice to hear your mum is ok, but I am sorry about her losing her breasts, I can't imagine how that must feel, but at least she is ok, and she has you, you sound like a fantastic daughter I went for my appt, the doc couldn't feel the lump very well, typical, he says that sometimes happens, and on our way home, I could feel it, i was nervous there and fiddling for it like a child. He wants me to have a scan, but i think there's been a mix up, because that was a week ago i had the appt, and i still haven't heard about a scan date, next week i will need more HRT, and the GP had hoped we would know exactly what we are dealing with...it doesn't seem we will, IDK Incidentally, i don't know if this is a good or bad thing, but it's becoming quite tender in that area, not painful, but when touching it it is tender. But at least it doesn't seem to have grown x

What a great site. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and has gone through a double mastectomy and actually has surgery tomorrow morning for stage 2 of her reconstruction. She has a spacer/expander placed on the right side already (there was no cancer in the right breast) and tomorrow they place a flap of skin from her shoulder balde on her left breast to create enough tissue and they will place another expander/spacer in the left breast and will slowly fill it over the next couple months. Then she will have final implants put in. Incidentally she was late stage 2 early stage 3 when they found hers. Her doc kept insisting it was just dense tissue. So ladies if you are uncomfy with what your doc says find another doc...my mom did and it saved her life. She is in remission now, but thank you so much for this post. She and I are very very close so this really is a cause so close to my heart. Thanks Nikki |

I would get a pre BA mammo. Even at your age. Just to be safe.

I just had my first mammo (see the "recovery thread") after my BA -- it was a piece of cake! I really was worried about pain, hurting the implants, and just being embarrassed about having a "boob job." It was very easy. These boobs are no reason not to get checked.

I am 47 y.o.... my mom and her sister have had breast cancer- complete with a mastectomy (Auntie Carol)- needless to say, it has put the whole family on alert since neither one were 'at risk' to begin with... I am having my mom go with me to the local cancer hospital (Moffitt in Tampa) to get BrCa tested since it easier for them to check your genes when they know where the family member has the deletion/mutation on theirs. My insurance also covers the testing because I have 2 first generation family members with one before 50 y.o.- mom @ 65 yo and my auntie @ 50 yo. Check it out.

This is my third consecutive year to walk in the Race for the Cure in November. This year hits a little harder for me as my step-sister and two friends have been diagnosed with DCIS. One friend has already had her mastectomy (in both breasts even tho only one showed cancer) and is in the midst of her tissue expansion with the expectation of reconstruction to begin at the end of the year. The other friend has her mastectomy scheduled (also doing both even though the cancer showed up in one). My step-sister just made the decision to also do a complete mastectomy since her mother died of breast cancer 10 years ago. I find as I get older that more and more are being diagnosed with breast cancer in one form or another. This year DCIS seems to be the one and it's the scariest kind. There aren't always lumps to be felt because the cancer is within the milk ducts and glands of the breast tissue. Neither of my friends or step-sister had lumps. Two friends had breast reductions and when the removed tissue was sent to pathology (standard procedure for surgery) thats when the diagnosis was found. My step-sister tested positive for BrCa and decided to do a couple biopsies of her breasts to see if anything could be there and sure enough, DCIS had settled in. Even though we may not be able to feel lumps and bumps we all need to at least do our feeling about and see our doc if anything seems out of the ordinary, even if that is just a little voice inside your head. Better safe than sorry!!! |

Great Post! I do mammograms and ultrasounds so I deal with this everyday! To those of you with family members, or who have Cancer themselves, I am so sorry! If you havent had a mammogram and are old enough- dont delay! It is not that bad...And dont let the fear of messing up your implants keep you from going. This is not something to take lightly.

Thanks for this thread I have known a few people who have fought breast cancer and won. I actually picked my surgeon because of the wonderful reconstructions he does for women. My heart goes out to those of you who have had this or lost someone to it. |

The best advice I could give anyone is to do monthly breast exams! My grandmother was just diagnosed yesterday with breast cancer. Now she has to get her lymphs under her arms biopsied... Then the doc is going to tell us the best course of action! I'm praying for her!!!
