Exclamation Breast Cancer Awareness

October is breast cancer awareness month. Please make sure to do your monthly breast exams. If you're not sure how to do the exam, go to http://cms.komen.org/bse/ for more information.

To donate a free mammogram with the click of your mouse, go to The Breast Cancer Site and click on the "Click to give" button. You can click as many times as you like, and this is not limited to the month of October. You can do this throughout the year.

Know the signs of breast cancer, and what to look for during your exam:
  • Lump, hard knot or thickening
  • Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening
  • Change in the size or shape of the breast
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
  • Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
  • Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
  • New pain in one spot that doesn’t go away

Good reminder, Nikki.

I am going for my first post-breast augmentation mammogram next week - ugh! Not looking forward to it, but put it off too long already.

Good to see this here. I am only 25 and currently have DCIS, a form of breast cancer that i'm having (the lumps) removed in the same surgery as my breast augmentation. Good to see more people becomming aware. Your never too young to start checking!!!

My mom just got diagnosed yesterday.

This is her second time. She had DCIS 10 years ago. Now she has a malignancy on the right and a precancer on the left. She sees the surgeon on Tuesday for her options. I know they will tell her she needs a mastectomy. I told her that now she can get nice perky ta ta's like me.
I'm just wondering if we should go through the BRACA testing now or wait until later. I JUST had my surgery. Do I really want to think about a preventative mastectomy and redo now?? I just don't know. I think at the very least, I'll talk to my doctor and maybe do the testing. Anyone else dealing with this????

very sorry to hear this hun!! as you may have seenabove i have DCIS and am having breast tissue removed during my breast augmentation so hopefully they will get it all. I have 3 aunties with breast cancer as well. Get checked now, it's better to find out your all clear that to leave it, find out you left it too long all for the sake of some pretty boobies. They can be replaced but your health can't. Good luck and ((((((big hugs))))))) for your mum. xoxox

I get mammograms every year. I've had two fibroadenoma's removed. (benign fatty tumors) but they keep a close eye on me. That's how my mom started too. With the little adenoma's. Makes me a bit nervous.

I'm so sorry hon. I can't imagine losing my mom. I still don't believe the news. I think once she starts treatment, it will hit me.
May I ask how old she was when she was diagnosed??? My mom is 60.

I had my first diagnostic mammo (not screening) a month before my breast augmentation so I'd have a baseline.

I just did the Race for the Cure this morning and it felt good to get out there to support all that I know who have had, have or passed away from breast cancer.

ekgmom and kimba - best of luck to you both.

slinky - the mammo isn't as bad as people make it sound. Don't fret, it's over in about 2 minutes!

oneinabox - so sorry to hear of your mothers passing. My best friend lost her mother a few years back to breast cancer after a 4 year battle. FIVE of my mom's friends have been diagnosed within the past year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a lump, and have an appt on Thurs 6th to see what it is...

It started with itchiness about 1cm below the nipple, I ignored it, and about 4 weeks later went to itch it and felt a lump, about the size of a pea, it won't move, and I can't say it hurts, but now have to find out what it is, I've never had a mammogram before, but suspect i will this week. It's the thought of the biopsy that is worrying me most, (obviously along with finding out what it is)...I havent told my family or the kids, I think so far that's been the hardest part, keeping this a secret...

So, yes, make sure you check yourselves x
